    2. James Reed
    3. I am now looking for information on John Galloway and Nancy (Nan) Johnson. He was the son of Robert R. and possibly Elizabeth Galloway Johnson of Marion, county Alabama. John was born in Alabama, but moved to Wayne Co., TN. He was first married to Nancy ?, then after her death, he married Nancy (Nan) Shubert. After John's death, Nan married Sam Rainey, then Harvey Shubert in 1933. It is presumed that John died somewhere after 1910 because that is the last census he is listed on. John was also called Lumberfoot and Bigfoot Johnson. I was told he died in the poorhouse by a relative of his first wife, but that doesn't match what John and Nan's son Josiah, my grandfather, told. What I need most is John's death date as close as possible, and where he is buried. I was told it was in a Modern Woodman cemetary in Savannah, and he was buried with military honors as he served in the Civil War as a Bugler, then a scout. Any information will be appreciated. Nan by the way is buried in ! Cromwell Crossroads Cemetery in Lutts with Harvey. John was 63 in the 1910 census so that would make his birth date 1847, but it is also noted by the family that he was much older than that. If anyone knows or can find any info on John or Nan or their parents and family, it would be greatly appreciated. Rosemary Johnson Reed

    3. Dr. Robert L. Douglas was born 3 Apr 1872 and died 11 Dec 1920, Wayne Co., TN, buried Cromwell Crossroads Cemetery. He married on 19 Apr 1920 to Miss Fanny Cromwell, daughter of John Sidney Cromwell and his second wife, Genira Dickerson. Fanny was born 14 Jan 1899. I don't remember when she died but it was in the 1980's. After Dr. Douglas' death, Fanny remarried to Ed Copous. Dr. Douglas and Fanny did not have any children. He, however, was a widower in the 1920 census and was listed as born in Mississippi. Dr. R. L. Douglas had two children by previous marriage: Lafayette Douglas, b. 29 Oct 1902, d. 15 Jan 1926, and Oliver Douglas, born 1904, MS. I don't know of any living descendants, but Oliver apparently did marry as his daughter Orline Douglas b. 23 Mar 1936, d. 9 Jun 1937 is buried in the Cromwell Crossroads Cemetery. Dr. Douglas did not practice medicine in Wayne County very long. He is not listed in the 1910 census, and if I remember what I was told, he didn't arrive in the county until about 1916. To my knowledge, none of Dr. Douglas' records survive. 2. Edgar D. Byler, III
    3. Some time ago, several people wrote me wondering what had happened to the biographies that had been posted to the old Genconnect boards. To answer that question, I don't know. But I have been giving the idea some thought. We do have a Biographies page up at http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnwayne/biographies.htm and I do have an invitation on that page to send/post a biography. So far the only things I have posted are the biographies from Goodspeed's 1887 History of Tennessee (Wayne County section); the Wayne County, Tennessee World War I Veterans' Biographies and a 1922 newspaper article about Charles "Uncle Charlie" M. Thompson's visit to Memphis. I'd like to expand what we have up on the Biographies page, so am inviting you all to think about submitting a biography on an ancestor, relative, or acquaintance who either was born, lived or died in Wayne County, Tennessee. Please submit your biographies in prose. Remember those wonderful times in high school English class writing papers and do your thing on the bioigraphy. I will not be editing these biographies except with the spell checker, so what you submit will be what you see on the page! Remember that! Edgar

On a different note, our Guestbook has been removed from the page for the time being. We had been spammed by a flurry of spurious entries. I hadn't checked the Guestbook in several months and didn't know those entries were there. I apologize to all. The offending entries will be removed and the Guestbook will be restored in the near future. I wish to thank those who wrote me Tuesday to let me know about the situation. I'm still working on the 1870 census albeit slowly. Hope to have another district uploaded soon. Edgar

    1. [TNWAYNE] Copyright Fundamentals for Genealogy
    2. I am passing the below information to those possibly interested in publishing their family information sometime in the future. The article mentioned in this website is very informative and may give you a sigh of relief regarding old timey copyrights, or the lack thereof, as pertaining to them in today's world. There is also a free mailing list ~ [email protected] which is equally informative. Recently I shared to a list, information from records my grandmother [1869~1969] had made, probably using family notes from her mother-in-law [1820~1900] and copied from a family Quaker member's diary written late 1700s to about 1835. My post was ultimately removed from the archives with the claim that the information had been copyrighted by a genealogical society in the 1930s. Between Mike GOAD's article on his website [mentioned below] and the Copyright list, one should definitely know when they are on safe ground... which I was, definitely. Hope these help someone else to not go through the stress that I did. Annie ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I've made free reprint and redistribution rights available to all of the list administrators (and anyone else who is interested) for an article that I wrote on copyright and genealogy. The intent was that they share the article and reprint/redistribution rights offer to their subscribers if they thought it worthwhile. I thought I should share it here, as well, for those who are not subscribed to other lists, since I'm the list admin for this list. This is what I provided to the others who are on the mailing list for list administrators: I have written a new article on copyright and genealogy that I am making available with free reprint and redistribution rights. Please feel free to use it on your mailing lists or web pages if you deem it appropriate. Often, in genealogy, questions related to copyright arise. For several years, I've had a website where I tried to answer many of those questions and I've actively participated in the discussions on the copyright-l mailing list at RootsWeb. More recently, I've been writing articles based on what I've learned about copyright, which I am also posting online. My most recent article is intended to apply some basics of copyright to genealogy related issues. "Copyright Fundamentals for Genealogy," was specifically written to grant free reprint and redistribution rights. It is located at: http://www.stellar-one.com/copyright_concepts/fundamentals_gene.htm Please feel free to use the article for any genealogy related use, such as: - your own website (with its look and feel), - email to others, - mailing list posting, - genealogy or historical society newsletter, - as a free handout at libraries The only restrictions that I have for its use is that its text is not edited or altered and, if used in a website, that a link is provided back to my copyright website." Thanks Mike Goad http://stellar-one.com list administrator for the Goad, Shinn, Snodgrass, and Wineland mailing lists on RootsWeb

    2. David Cagle
    3. The Hardin County Historical Society will meet in the Welch Room at the Hardin County Library on Thursday the 31st day of July at 7:00 PM. Following a brief business meeting, there will be a round-table discussion of Colonel James Hardin, who led the first organized group to settle in the Hardin County area in 1816. As James is generally considered to be the founder of Hardin County, perhaps the Historical Society can find some way to remember him by locating his home site, which was also the First Courthouse of the County, and locating and marking his final resting place. All are invited to attend. Bring any genealogical or historical information that would help discover the history associated with Col. James Hardin. 2. Clay Daniels
    3. Jerry W. Murphy Thanks for the letter. You have done a lot of research on our DANIEL family and I apppreciate you sharing it with everyone, and posting it on your website too. I think you and I are both open to the discovery of the truth, and the DNA evidence is a key clue. We now know my gg-grandfather Robert C. Daniel is relative of Plummer Daniel. The 1810 Buncombe County North Carolina census is interesting, but we still need to account for William Daniel shown nearby as "20010-20010". I don't yet understand how Hiram Harris fits in but in looking at a copy (not transcription) of the will, I do see that he and Mike Shoffner attest to the Robert C. Daniel will of 6th May 1867. The BENNETT question is interesting. We know that Robert's daugher Elizabeth M. Daniel b: 23 DEC 1837 married DeWitt Clinton BENNETT 7 Aug 1856. But you are talking about their parents generation, and I have this snippet of info from Evelyn: "From the Earliest Court Records of Bedford County, page 27, by Marsh, we learn that Hezekiah Bennett applied in court in the 1848 December term that Robert C. Daniel be appointed guardian of the minor heirs of William Bennett, deceased." More snippets: "Robert C. Daniel and Hezekiah Ray were witnesses to the sale of 60 acres by Elijah Parker to Plummer Daniel on December 12, 1836. Robert C. Daniel and James A. Daniel were among the petitioners on November 22, 1843 to the General Assembly of Tennessee for authorization of sale of a section of the school tract, setting aside four acres to include a meeting house (this was Raus School)." Keep up the good work. We need to find more DNA participants from lines other than our Robert C. & Plummer, and I've been trying to "beat the bushes and flush them out", but it is a slow process. I honestly think this DANIEL family is larger than Hiram. Let's keep our minds open. Clay Daniels ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerry W. Among the copies added is the 1810 Buncombe County, North Carolina census page listing Hiram Daniel and Robert Daniel. Also added was Hiram Daniel's land grant in Rutherford County, North Carolina and the deed where he later sold the land. Both land records are difficult to read. I've added the page from the "River Counties" journal which noted the death of Plummer Daniel. Maybe at some point I'll get the actual newspaper obituary and add it too. The Rhea County, Tennessee bill of sale which listed Plummer Daniel and George Gillispie as the Administrators of the estate of Hiram Daniel, dec., has also been added. They were selling a slave boy named Isaac in the bill of sale. Interestingly the next bill of sale is where George Gillispie is buying the boy from the person he was sold to. I suspect this may be the black Isaac Daniel which appears on Tennessee census records after the Civil War. I have a few more Daniel things to add when time permits. Clay, what was the connection between Robert C. Daniel and Hiram Harris in Bedford County, Tennessee? I just noticed Hiram Harris witnessed his will. Is this Hiram Harris a descendant of Hiram Daniel? By the way, I don't know if you know this or not but the John W. Dennen (Denning) listed on the 1850 Bedford County, Tennessee (page 521) residing between Robert's sons, James and Benjamin, was the son-in-law of John A. Daniel of Rhea and Meigs Counties, Tennessee. Yes, Elizabeth Dennen was Elizabeth Daniel, daughter of John A. Daniel (b. c1790) and Sarah Massey. I believe this John A. Daniel is another brother of Robert C. Daniel and Plummer Daniel. Another question. Who was the wife of Hezekiah Bennett that was a neighbor of Robert C. Daniel in Bedford County, Tennessee? Was "Mima" (possibly Jemima) a Daniel and sister of Robert? I noticed Hezekiah and Mima (b. c1810) named sons Hiram, Solomon and Robert. If Mima was a Daniel, she was near the same age as Solomon Daniel (1808-1863) who married Jane Orr in Rhea County, Tennessee before moving to Greene County, Missouri. According to descendants of him that I've corresponded with in the past he was the brother of Plummer Daniel. They say Plummer and Solomon were among those that moved the Cherokees west and were paid with land in Missouri. They say Solomon moved there but Plummer didn't. Now I'll let you digest all of this information. :-) Jerry W.
