Here is an eye opener for anyone who is researching ancestors in Washington Co, TN before, say 1830. This includes anyone with Beals ancestors, like myself, who were said to be born in Washington Co. around 1788. I received e-mails from the list stating there was no Washington County or State of TN at that time--so is my data accurate? Here is what I discovered. "The son of John Beals who married Mary Clayton in Penna in 1682, William, settled in what is now Knox County, Tenn. when all that section was Washington Co, N.C.--years before the state of Franklin and the State of Tennessee." This is quoted from a compiled, published genealogy by Clarence A. Bales, Bales Families in East Tennessee, 1952. Call letters 929.273 Bl(letter L) 456--also on microfilm. So, that means for some of us, graves and records would likely be--not in Washington Co, TN. Try the Knox Co, TN mailing list (if there is one). I can't swear by the accuracy of this information but it is worth exploring and just might knock down some brick walls, friends. Jean Bails
