I am a new member of the Washington County list, prompted to join by the forwarding of a recent exchange of Wash. Co. List e-mails on John HAWS and wife Nancy. (Messages were forwarded by my Campbell cousins Oscar and Jan Williamson, [email protected]) I am the Richard Wilson that cousin Jim Hawes referred to in his 1/24 posting on his g-grandfather John Smith HAWS. Like Jim, I too am trying to sort out info. on John HAWS, and esp. on his wife Nancy Elizabeth WILSON who md. (1) John HAWS 1859 in Washington Co. and (2) John F. BEALS 1864 in Washington Co. >From Sue Maxwell's very helpful posting we know that: Nancy2 CAMPBELL (Hugh1) b. abt. 1806, d. Sep. 1840, md. John HAWS. Sue states they had 1 child, John Smith3 HAWS (Nancy2, Hugh1). But Nancy d. bef. 13 Oct. 1840, the date John m. (2) R. HAIL. So does this mean that John Smith3 HAWS, who (according to Jim Hawes) was b.1841 prob. Wash. Co., TN, was s. of John HAWS and R. HAIL, not Nancy CAMPBELL?! Since Sue seems sure that John Smith3 HAWS was Nancy's son, I suspect he may have been b. 1840; possibly mother Nancy d. in childbirth with him. Jim Hawes -- are you sure about this 1841 b.d.? This John Smith3 HAWS (b. 1841) d. 27 Jan. 1863 in Hospital 15, Louisville, KY -- mbr. of Co. B, 4th TN Cavalry (US). He md. Nancy Elizabeth WILSON 12 Sept. 1859 in Washington Co., TN. Can anyone shed any light on antecedents of this Nancy WILSON? Here's what I know (or think I know): Nancy Elizabeth WILSON b. 26 Jan. 1839 in PA (??). She gave PA as her b.p. in 1910 census for Scott Twp., Johnson Co., Iowa [Nancy E. BEALS], and her parents' birthplace as North Carolina (for both of them). [Note that her son Charles Oscar Malcolm BEALS (1865-1940) gives his mother Nancy's birthplace as TN in 1900 census for Johnson Co., IA, while Nancy reportedly gives her b.p. as PA in 1910 census, Scott Twp., Johnson Co., IA. I have a hunch she was b. Washington Co., TN.] Nancy md. (1) John Smith3 HAWS 12 Sept. 1859 in Washington Co., TN. Nancy and John HAWS had 1 child: 1. John William Squib HAWS, b. 17 June 1860, md. Sarah Elizabeth DOUGLAS 28 Feb. 1878 Wash Co., TN(?). Nancy WILSON md. (2) John F. BEALS 25 Aug. 1864 Washington Co., TN. John F. BEALS was the son of Joseph BEALS, Jr. and Mary SHERFY/SHERFIG. Nancy was living in Jonesboro in 1890; she d. 26 Feb. 1916 in Iowa City, Johnson Co., IA. She and John F. BEALS had 5 children: 1. Charles Oscar Malcolm BEALS, b. 26 May 1865 Jonesboro, md. 30 July 1890 in Washington Co., TN, Ida Myrtle CAMPBELL, dau. of Henderson (Henry) Clark CAMPBELL and Martha Ann MCGINNIS. (Charles and Ida BEALS moved from Washington Co. to Iowa City, IA, in 1895.) 2. James F. C. BEALS, b. 26 Jan. 1878, Jonesboro. 3. Melvin S. BALES, b. 7 Dec. 1875 Jonesboro, m. Fanny KINSINGER. 4. Lydia Ellen BEALS, b. 28 May 1877 Jonesboro, m. John H. SUSONG. 5. George BEALS, b. 31 Aug. 1879 Johnson City, m. Lady Jo KIRBY. So -- any help on clearing up the b.d. (1840? 1841) of John Smith3 HAWS, or on this Nancy WILSON line? Thanks, Richard Wilson Seattle, WA
