Connie, I have located all the Shields in Washington County land records. There was only 1 entry for R.W. Shields in 1880. He sold the land, so it's likely that he received his land through another way, such as a will. There are several Julia Shields in the records, it's likely that they all tie in somehow. However, the book entitled Joseph Shields of Washington County, Tennessee mentions that there are two different Shields families of the county. While the book provides a lot of good information, there are many errors to be aware of. As I'm researching the Shields, I'll try to keep you posted. Have you obtained a possible death record? I am not sure about the time between 1880 and 1890 but in 1900 he ends up in Texas. I have asked for a census lookup for 1850 in hopes that his family can be found there. I would like to see your ancestry there though. I think from the census records that they are more than likely all related in some way or at least the ones left in 1880. I did notice a Julia b. 1814 on the census and wondered if that might be an aunt? So anyway Robert having been born in 1850 or so wouldn't be listed. I just don't know where his parents are is all. Thank you for checking the tax list for me. However, I am currently unaware of any Robert W. Shields. There is no Robert Shields listed in the tax record index from 1778-1850. What time period was your Robert there? I am looking for the parents of Robert W. Shields. I believe it is possible that two of his brothers are and lived there also, Joseph and John. He is also found in the census with a Walker family. Does anyone have access to the marriage records there? Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated.
