Hi list members, I inquired a couple of times to see if anyone had information about Hughes Grist Mill in Washington County. I never got a response. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jewell Chapman
Hi Ron (and lis), I'm sorry to have misled you about the Cherokee Creek Baptist Church membership list on the Daiel Haston website. I thought my cousin told me that he put the after 1790 list there, but he just put the names pertinant to out family. I still don't have a list of all of the early members but I have : History of Washington Co TN 1988 Compiled by the Watauga Association of Genealogists - Upper TN Loudon Public Library A now deceased relative sent it to me but it isnt complete - it is a copy of the page that lists my ancestors' names Here are a few other names - more should have been on the next page - which I don't have: April 2 1783 James Keele, John Lemon, ann Bruner,Magdalen Hastings, Barbary Bass, John Brown, Agnes percifull, Francis Baxter,John Bayless, Mary Nodding, Eliz. Lemon, Caty Osamus, John Hunter, Barbary Hunter, Samuel Bayless, Daniel Bayless, Zurial Keele, Nicholas fain, William Nodding, Daniel McCray, Ann Bayless, Richard and the next page is missing. I would love to find that page. Here are some additional names in an entirely different article, the date is different - I think 1783 is correct: Church minutes begin April 2 1782: James Keele John Bayless Daniel Bayless Samuel Bayless John Lemon John Hunter alexander Chambers Nicholas fain, William Nodding Mrs Nicholsa Fain Mary Nodding Sarah McCray Sarah Wood Magdalen Hasting Lydia Keel Mary Baxter Polly Goodpaster Mrs Jonathan Bird Daniel McCray Samuel Wood Daniel Hasting Richard Keel Francis Baxter Solomon Goodpaster Jonathatn Bird Zuriah Keel Ann Bayless Mary Bayless Margaret Bayless Eliz. Lemon Barbara Hunter Mary Chambers Rueben Bayless Lynn Russell Christopher Brunk John brown thomas West Cathy Osamus Sister Hodges Pricilla Nodding Barbara Bass Elizabeth Dilling Elizabeth this page also ends and I don't have the next page Sherry _________________________________________________________________ See when your friends are online with MSN Messenger 6.0. Hi, I want to thank everyone who replied to my message. Ron, my cousin looked at that film and said that the early records were practically unreadable. He put the 1790+ names on his website. Go to: www.danielhaston.com and click on 'Churches" and you'll find the records for the Cherokee Baptist Church in Wash Co and the Big Pigeon Baptist Church in Cocke Co TN. Cherokee Baptist Church records are on microfilm and can be borrowed on inter- library loan. For anyone who is interested in John Strain of Washington County (1759-1840) or his descendants, a Strain DNA surname project has been underway at FamilyTreeDNA.com for several months now. Among the findings so far.... The testing has shown that I am probably related to a descendant of Thomas Jefferson Strain of Cocke County, TN (1808-1865). I am a descendant of John Strain of Washington County. There is only one genetic mutation of difference between our two lines, implying that we had a common male ancestor in the recent past. Previously there was no known connection between these Strain lines. There are three genetic differences between the John Strain line and the line of David Strain of South Carolina. This implies that we might have shared a common male ancestor, but if so it was further back in the past. For more information, including how to join the project, we are constructing a website at this URL: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~straindna/StrainDNAProject.htm Thanks, Ted Strain

I have reached a stonewall in my family research. I am looking for any information for Mary Bales. Born either July or December 1891. Married John Canada Hammitt in 1907 or 1908. Died December 14, 1938. Buried at Union Church of Christ December, 15 1938. Married John Canada Hammitt in 1907 or 1908. Lived in the Johnson City or Jonesborough area. The dates are confusing as they were written in pencil in a family bible and are faded.
Hi List, does anyone know where I can get the early membership list of the Cherokee Baptist Church that was formed in Jonesboro TN in 1782? I have the 1790+ list but need earlier. My own Archiblad Thomas line comes from Rheatown, Greene County, Tn. I would be interested in more information if possible. My grandmother was Letha Mae Thomas/Hobert who died about 10 years ago in Davenport, Iowa. She has many grandsons left who are interested in genealogy. They might also be interested. Hi, I would like to let everyone know that a THOMAS surname DNA project is beginning. There are several groups of Thomases in East Tennessee - Blount, Sevier, Cocke, Sullivan, Jefferson counties - that would love to learn if they are connected. Conventional research has thus far turned up nothing concrete. Of course our project is not solely focused on east Tennessee. We hope to find connections between family lines all over the country and even out of the country if possible. If you need more information or know a Thomas male who might like to join, please direct them to me at btchaffin@comcast.net or to http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_det.asp?group=Thomas. Thanks for your help, Bonnie Thomas Chaffin

Does anyone have access, or know how to get access to the Biographical History of Washington County, TN? I searched the website pages but the links don't include it and it doesn't seem to be available at the local genealogical society. I'm looking for a biography on any of the Cox family which I believe goes back to John Cox (with 5 sons and 3 daughters) who first appears in the 1830 census. My own ancestor is Cyrus Franklin Cox and wife Colydia Maiden, whose daughter Martha E. Cox married William A. Bailey from Rheatown, Greene County, TN. Would be happy to reciprocate with any requests from the Atlanta area where I live.
