Three cemeteries have either been added or updated - Logan's Chapel, New Hope Brethren, and Northington-Carathers. We hope you find a long lost ancestor here. The Watauga Association of Genealogists will have a new book on the market. Washington Co. TN Marriage Records, 1871-1899, will be released near the end of the summer or early fall. More information for the Washington Co. researchers. Recently I was reading early data on the Internet about the area that was Fort Patrick Henry at present day Kingsport. It said that Nathional Gist and his wife Wuther were allowed by Old Tassel the Cherokee chief to live on the great island across from Fort Henry. That is what we today call the Long Island of the Holston. The Guess family are, in almost every case, descendants of Richard and Elizabeth (Cromwell) Gist of early Maryland. Two of thier sons, Christopher and Nathaniel Gist, were very famous Indian traders with the Cherokee Nation. Christopher Gist was George Washington's guide and interpreter on his famous trip to the French at what became Pittsburgh, PA and is credited by George Washington with saving his life on two different occasions. Sequoyah, the extradinoraly famous Cherokee who single handedly developed the Cherokee written language is a descendant of Nathaniel Gist. Just some tidbits to chew over. Bill Hunter

I have hit the proverbial brick wall with my 3rd great grandmother, Nancy E. GUESS, born c1804. She had a younger sister named Sarah (Sally) GUESS. Nancy married Adam HOPKINS, son of Jabez HOPKINS and Rachel CLOUSE, in around 1820; Nancy's sister Sally married Adam's brother Elijah HOPKINS several years later. Both families ended up in Claiborne County, Tennessee by the time of the 1830 census. Nancy and Adam left Tennessee for Iowa in 1849. Sally and Elijah remained in Claiborne County (later Hancock County). I know nothing more about the GUESS sisters, other than that they may have been born in Alabama (per census records). Jabez and Rachel (CLOUSE) HOPKINS, parents of Adam and Elijah, reportedly moved their family from Washington County, Virginia to Washington County, Tennessee in around 1802, when Rachel's father George CLOUSE moved there. So it is possible that Adam and Elijah met their future wives in Washington County, then later moved to Claiborne County. I did find a Thomas GUESS listed in the 1850 Washington County TN census. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might know something about any of the members of the above-mentioned families. Thanks! Best regards, Janet Zengel Messer Micanopy, Florida

Good morning list. Before my computer went nutts and I had to delete everything I had saved a map of Washington County that marked cemeteries off the internet. I can't seem to find it anywhere online. I know that some on the x's on the map were marking cemeteries, but some of them may have marked other places. Does anyone on here know where I can get this map again. I was comparing it with info I got from the library. It was made in Adobe Acrobat ?? Please point me in the right direction if you know, or if you know of any cemetery maps at all. Thanks, April Maupin
