    3. I'm trying to trace my great-grandfather, Hiram Adkins, who was born abt. 1834 in TN. His mother was probably Catherine Adkins who was born in NC in 1813 and a father ? Adkins born in TN. I'm guessing they were in the Washington Co. area before Hiram moved to Alabama's Winston Co.(was on 1860 and 1870 census there) and Cullman Co. where he stayed. Catherine(widowed with some grown children turns up living next door to Hiram on the 1870 census.) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. 1. Crouch Cemetery Alert Update
    2. Betty Jane Hylton
    3. Evening, Craig Stewart from Etowah, TN, a descendant of Joseph Crouch, came up today and got in contact with the foreman and developer. Craig cleared off the cemetery and place two markers in the area. The developer has put up an orange netting fence to protect the area from grading. At least for now, the cemetery is safe. Craig needs your support and help to see this project through to completion. Dennis Craig Stewart PO Box 63 Etowah, TN 37331 423-263-2484 We are pleased with the response of so many of you to yesterday's alert. Please help Craig in any way that you can. 2. Betty Jane, I am a descendant of Joseph Crouch and a member of WAGS. I will make whatever contact you suggest for the preservation of the cemetery on his former land grant. Please give me the contact information so I could write or email. Additionally, I have searched for years for proof of his Revolutionary War service and had no success. Could you please tell me where I can find this information? I live in Maryland and have looked at NARA in downtown DC with no luck. I must be looking incorrectly under the wrong category. Or would you have the land grant information or guidance on how to find it? I would appreciate your guidance in this. Evelyn Naranjo

    3. This afternoon, Jackie and Dawn Peters, Chester Willis and I met Mrs. Sue Overbay, granddaugther of Dr. Joe Clark. Dr. Clark built the big yellow house at 2362 Boones Creek Rd., JC (now the Grapevine Cottage) and owned the farm land surrounding the house. Mrs. Overbay remembers where the barn set and that there was a cemetery beside the barn. She pointed out the spot and we located 11 graves with dowsing rods. We have a call in to the developer, Mr. Roy Jones (423-794-6415) to inform him of the cemetery. Mrs. Overbay stated that the graves were marked with field stones and at one time there was a fence around them. This is part of the land grant to Joseph Crouch (1749-1830) for his Revolutionary War service. He was also sheriff of Washington County. This cemetery could contain graves of Crouch family members. Descendants should voice their concern to the developer. The bull dozers are at work on the hill now for a new housing development. Betty Jane Hylton Co-cordinator, Washington Co. 1. Civil Gapp School
    2. Hello, I'm new to the list. I live in Limestone, TN in Washington County. I'm on the historical committee at the church I belong to. I am trying to find photos of and any information on the old Civil Gapp School that was on Providence Road back in 1870. This is where this church was started, then it moved into the old Campbell's Store on the corner of Providence and Bowmantown roads. It was called the Philadelphia Baptist Church at that time. They were finally able to build an actual church building in 1880. Anyone who has any information or photos or old documents please let me know. Or even advice on where I could look, besides the church. We can't find anything at the church other than the information I've given so far and the minutes of the old church. Anything would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Lori Craiger

    3. Hi Betty Jane, I just checked the Washington County Churches page and it is most impressive. However, I've done a bit of research in the area and have some info that would shine some light on the early Union Church and would change what is online rather substantially. Please let me know a private email address since I can't send attachments through Rootsweb. Thanks, Bill Hunter

    3. Court Records is a broad category. They must be further defined - are they Court Minutes, Circuit Court, Chancery Court or Superior Court records? 2. Could the reference possibly be referring to Chuckey Episcopal Methodist Church? It is located on a hill with a small cemetery adjacent to it. This may be in Greene County now but with how often the county boundaries changed, it might be a possibility. Just a thought! Sharon
