Jackie, I wish I could answer your question. For years I have been searching for the family of my Elizabeth J. Shanks, b. August 6, 1824. She married Jesse Davis, April 15, 1841. By 1841, the Davis family had been in the Baileyton area of Greene County for a couple of generations, and Jesse and Elizabeth remained in that area and raised their children there. He died around 1865. She died July 12, 1900 and is buried in Cross Anchor Cemetery near Baileyton. There are a lot of Shanks in Hawkins County, but I've never found any Elizabeth with an 1824 birth year. I wonder if she could be related to your group? From what I've read, the college established by Dr. Doak was named Martin Academy. Is this school still in existance? If so, would SKS please send me the address? If it's out of business, does anyone know where the records for the school are now kept? My g-grandfather attended the school in the early 1800s. Thank you. I have carefully examined the microfilm for the Cherokee Baptist Church minutes. Also, I have a copy of the 1938 transcript of the church covenant and pages of names who joined the church. See: http://www.danielhaston.com/places/churches/bigpigeon/records-compared.htm There seems to be some discrepancies between the two of them. For example, I don't see the complete church covenant in the microfilm, but it is in the 1938 transcripts. Some of the earliest signatures do not "appear" to be in the microfilm. Can someone please help me with this? I am looking for the Heaston family signatures. I have been told that Abraham and Magdalene Heaston were signers of the church covenant when the church began, but have not been able to any Heaston names prior to about 1790. I have an ancestor who is said to have been in Captain Thomas Wilson's milita during the War of 1812 in Greene County, TN. Does anyone know where I might find the roster for this company. In 1870 District 9, Washington County, David N. Taylor age 24 was listed in the household of David A. Taylor, presumably his father. His occupation was given as deputy sheriff. Can anyone tell me more about David N. Taylor, especially where he was in 1880? Thanks for any help. Linda Stockdale
I just got back from a whirlwind trip to TN, and I've uploaded some tombstone photos from the Old Jonesboro Cemetery and the Old Harmony Cemetery in Greeneville. Some are family members, but many are random. Anyone is welcome to save them if you have an interest: http://www.oldplaces.org/TNCemeteries/ Also, Betty Jane and Margaret, I have several "landscape" photographs of Maplelawn Cemetery in Jonesboro if you want one. I guess they started using that cemetery around 1900, as our first family member buried there died in 1902. Pat Sabin
