    1. RE: [TNWASHIN-L] TURNEY, LITTLE, NC & TN

    3. Can't Nancy be a nickname for other names? (Often people used first and middle names interchangeably also.) Were there Little girls of about the correct age, although with other first names, in those families that you could research, with an eye to eliminating them as possibilities for being your Nancy? You might hit upon one who "disappears" around the time your Nancy shows up. -----Original Message----- From: T. We have gone through just about everything in this area about that area of TN that you are referring to. We had always thought that she was born there but just could find nothing to conntect her with the Littles who were there. Almost everywhere that our Turney was there was the same two or three Little families and we are almost sure that she was from one of them but can find nothing that lists any Nancy with any of the families. I'll keep digging. 3. I am a member of the DAR through Patriot William Cornett. If I knew more??? I wish I did. Robert Frost died in 1819-25 there is a transcribed copy of his will on the Hawkins County web site. There are two really good possibilities for him. Joseph or Simeon Frost could be his father and may be Revolutionary Patriots. I believe with no proven data that Joseph Roberts is Sarah's father. I believe she had a brother Pen (Penny) Roberts and a sister Nancy. That is all I have so far. Thank you very much. 3. Mr. Murphy, may I ask, would it be more work for you personally if the list were changed to meet the wishes of the list members, or is there another reason? I respectfully disagree with your "party line" reasoning. The message that you forwarded to the list from "T. Roberts" is a prime example of how our request might better suit the needs of the list members. When this person hit REPLY, his message would have gone to the list rather than only to you..... The information this person wished to present to the list may be of use to another researcher. You obviously saw that possibility and forwareded the message to the list. I understand that you are adamant about not changing the list, and that's a blatant misuse of your authority as the list administrator. It seems to me that the administrator should adhear to the wishes of the people that he or she is supposed to be trying to serve! You obviously don't care about what we want. 3. Dear fellow ancestor hunters, I have not written on list for quite some time and thought it time to add my surnames to the list. If any of you have any possible connections to any of my ancestors, please jump in and we can help each other through the murky depths that is Genealogy. My Great Great Grandfather was John Smith Haws, born in Washington County, Tennessee, in 1841. I believe his mother was a Campbell. He was married to Nancy Wilson (I have nothing on her but she may have been an orphan) on 15 Sept. 1859. They had one child, John William Squib Haws. John Haws died during the War Between the States, in Kentucky. His widow was given a pension from the State of Tennessee consisting of land near Jonesboro. Their son kept the land and raised his family there. He married Sarah Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of William Henry Harrison Douglas and Nancy Hyder, of Carter County. Sarah Douglas and John Hawes (he went by William) were married 28 Feb 1878 in Washington County. William and Sarah had 7 children, one of which died as a young child. Their sixth child was Opie Haws, born 11 Feb 1889 in Jonesboro and died 13 August 1951 in Atlantic, Iowa. He was my grandfather. I have the names, birth dates, and death dates of all their other children. I will be happy to share any information that I have. Happy Hunting, Jim Lee Hawes, CRNA-ARNP <HAWS, WILSON, HYDER, SIMMERLY, HUGHES, DOUGLAS, WRAHM, LAUGEL, WEBER, SCHMIDT, RAUCH, GRASS, and many others> PS, an interesting sidelight and a point to why we do this, my 27th great grandfather on the Douglas side, fought beside William Wallace (aka Braveheart) against the English in the 1300's We wouldn't be who we are if it weren't for our ancestors and we owe them the respect of finding who they were. > >

    1. TURNEY, LITTLE, NC & TN
    2. Anna Bertram
    3. Telette and All, From now on I will always hit "Reply All" for all my responses and I encourage everyone else to do so we can have some genealogical discussion on this list. I'm afraid I do not have any information for you, Telette, regarding the two surnames you mentioned, I might be able to help you regarding the relationship between North Carolina and Tennessee. Originally all of what is now the state of Tennessee was part of North Carolina. In 1796, the year your ancestor was born, Tennessee became a state. So it is possible she was born in the part of NC that became TN. That could explain the differences in the place of birth on old records. I think this is along the lines of your thoughts. It could also mean you need to check North Carolina repositories and libraries for information on her and her family. Hope this is of some help. 1. Pitcock/Pidcock/Pidcoe DNA
    2. There is an exciting DNA study of the different variant spellings of the Pitcock/Pidcock/Pidcoe surname. Although the name is rare, there has been five distinct separate families identified so far in North America. John Pitcock and his wife Mary Fisher lived in Washington County in the early 1800s before moving on to Monroe County, Kentucky with their married children. There were some Pitcock descendants that remained in the area. Any males interested, please consider joining. The DNA study has allowed the southern states Pitcocks to link DNA with Pidcocks tracing their ancestry back to the 1560s in Darley Dale, Derbyshire, England. Here is a link to the site: http://www.pidcock-family.org/DNA/DNA.htm
