    1. Crouch - Hoss Cemetery
    2. Betty Jane Hylton
    3. Afternoon, I'm happy to report that the Crouch - Hoss Cemetery has not been destroyed. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnwashin/cemetery/cemCl_Cr.htm#CROUCHJos The cemetery is located to the right after you enter the gates to Waterbrook Subdivison. Only fieldstones ever marked the graves and these were removed years ago. This area is to be landscaped with grass and trees. I have talked to one of the developers, not Ray Jones, and have been told that a marker may be placed on the cemetery to mark it at the descendants expense. I am willing to coordinate this effect with descendants and/or interested individuals and get the owners approval before purchasing a marker. Please contact me at bjhylton@uReach.com, if your are interested in this project. Betty Jane Hylton Co-cordinator, Washington Co. 3. Grave Responsibility You all might like to know the The Owsley History and Genealogy Society is also working on a preservation project and Tom Barrett a member is taking photos of all the cemeteries he can find in and around Owsley County. They will be posted on line in the near future. He has taken over 3,000 photos. 1. Grave responsibilities
    2. Betty Jane Hylton
    3. Good morning, Dawn Peters shared this article with me today and I thought some of you might find it interesting. We all need to be saving our history -- the old cemeteries. Betty Jane Grave responsibilities AS DEVELOPMENT ENDANGERS FAMILY CEMETERIES, SOME CONCERNED CITIZENS TRY TO SAVE THEM By Beverly Fortune HERALD-LEADER STAFF WRITER David Perry/Staff Sanden uncovered the name "Morton" at the Payne family cemetery, located on property Ball Homes is developing on Sandersville Road. More photosWhen Jacob Kizer died in 1827, he was buried in the family cemetery on his farm, west of downtown Lexington. Nearly 180 years later, Kizer is haunting the developers of Masterson Station neighborhood. His grave -- forgotten in an unmarked cemetery overgrown with weeds -- lies in the path of bulldozers clearing fields for the expanding subdivision. The imprint of tire tracks in the grass can be seen going over Kizer's headstone, now broken in pieces. Masterson Station resident Lisa Sanden and her husband Ron stumbled across the graves last August. When she saw the damage, Sanden called developer Steve Hayden to ask if he knew the cemetery had been desecrated. Concerned that the graves would be bulldozed, Sanden said she wanted the developers to know, "We knew about the cemetery. They couldn't hide it, pretend it wasn't there." Two weeks ago, Hayden told Sanden the cemetery will be preserved. "We're going to build around it," Hayden said last week. Each year, as suburban growth moves deeper into formerly rural land, old family cemeteries and abandoned graves turn up in the way of new development. The conflict between growth and graves is increasingly common in Fayette County and across the South, where farm families tended to bury their dead in small cemeteries on their own land. Such plots allowed for quick interment and easy maintenance of the grave. But, as families moved away and years went by, many cemeteries were forgotten, just like Kizer's plot in north Lexington. "It's not hard to lose a cemetery," said Nancy O'Malley, archaeologist at the University of Kentucky's anthropology museum. "A family dies out, the land is sold, headstones fall over. Grass grows over them pretty quickly." O'Malley said there are "tens of thousands" of family cemeteries in Kentucky. There's no way to know the number for sure because Kentucky lacks a central inventory. That could be changing. The Kentucky Historical Society has started an online cemetery database, and others are taking steps to find and preserve old cemeteries. Sanden, 26, a stay-at-home mom who moved to Lexington with her family 18 months ago, has become fascinated with Lexington's early history and hopes to focus new attention on long-forgotten cemeteries. After her discovery in Masterson Station, she organized the Fayette County Historic Cemetery Preservation Group to help other groups raise money to document and preserve old burial sites. Fayette County Attorney Margaret Kannensohn spent three years documenting 200 cemeteries in Lexington; most were abandoned, many containing graves dating to the early 1800s. Boone County has published a brochure mapping the locations of its 196 cemeteries. Interest in preserving small burial plots "is growing by leaps and bounds" because of the popularity of family genealogy, said Ann Johnson, administrative assistant at the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort. Yvonne Giles, who searches small cemeteries for slave graves, attended a recent meeting of the Fayette County Historic Cemetery Preservation Group and said that bulldozing graves destroys a cultural heritage buried in the soil. "Once graves are built over with houses, there's no going back," Giles said. 'Lengthy process' In Kentucky, strict laws govern moving graves. "It's a lengthy process," Johnson said. To receive a permit to relocate an abandoned cemetery, the applicant must wait out a 60-day notification period that gives relatives an opportunity to approve or object to the move, then fiscal court must declare the site abandoned. In Fayette County's case, the Urban County Council acts as fiscal court. To declare a cemetery abandoned, the applicant must prove the graves have been untended for at least 10 years. Once fiscal court has authorized relocation of the graves, the state registrar of vital statistics issues a permit. A funeral director or coroner must oversee the disinterment. All costs, including disinterment and reburial of remains, are paid by the person who wants the cemetery moved. It is a crime in Kentucky to bulldoze or destroy a grave site. Relocation "can easily cost $3,000 to $4,000 per grave space," said Dan Scalf, general manager of the Lexington Cemetery. Lexington received two requests to move graves in the past five months. One was from Hayden and Baker for the Jacob Kizer Cemetery; the other from Troy Thompson to move six graves at 350 Waveland Museum Lane for a Ball Homes development. Thompson said the graves will be relocated to a greenspace in the subdivision, the area fenced and markers placed on each grave. "We don't know names, so the headstones will say 'unknown person,'" he said. He said he has run into old cemeteries several times when developing subdivisions. He moved 23 graves from Tates Creek Road and two from Andover subdivision, all to the Lexington Cemetery. At the 13th hole of Andover Golf Course, he left 19 graves, and enclosed the space with a stone fence. In March, Ball Homes halted work on an 80-acre tract at Sandersville and Greendale roads when the company was notified of an abandoned cemetery on the property by descendants of people buried there. The relatives said they did not want the graves moved. Jonathan Norris, general counsel for Ball Homes, said the company will relocate a road through the subdivision to avoid the graves. "Once descendants were found, we wanted to follow their wishes," Norris said. Under Kentucky law, if relatives don't want a cemetery moved, it must stay. 16 graves found At the Jacob Kizer cemetery in Masterson Station, UK graduate preservation student Joe Pierson, at Sanden's request, probed the ground with a tire iron, locating 16 graves. Some lacked headstones and were merely sunken places in the ground. Hayden said he knew there was a cemetery on the property, purchased by Masterson Properties 10 years ago. But he never visited the site. He said he was unaware of the damage to the graves before Sanden called. He and partner James Baker first wanted to move the cemetery. But Sanden located a Kizer relative in Missouri, e-mailed her about the cemetery, and the woman said she did not want the graves moved. Earlier this week, Hayden said the graves will not be disturbed. "I don't have a problem with it," he said. Hayden will donate the cemetery to any group organized to maintain it. Sanden said it's important to keep such graves where they are. "My neighborhood was not always a subdivision. We know it's new," Sanden said. "Pioneers who worked hard and risked their lives to build Lexington are buried here. We need to be reminded of that, and pay homage to those people." ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number Voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag

    1. Lilburn

    3. Hi I'm looking (still) for the wife and parents of Andrew Lilburn. Andrew was originally from Frederick and then Berkeley Virginia (later to become West Virginia). He appears on the rent rolls in Virginia in the 1770s, he served in the revolution under Washington including a stint at Valley Forge. His daughter Nancy married Joseph Booth - their daughter Amanda Booth married John Ault of Knoxville, my gggg-grandfather. There were several other children of Andrews's including Jonas who married Mary Hartsell; Asbury who married Sarah Clark; Catherine who married a Willis Debord; Milly who married Wm. Mitchell; Andrew Jr. who married Eufy Walker; Margaret who married Joseph Boyd; Rachel who married a man with the surname of James; and Polly who married Benjamin Early. Andrew got a Revolutionary War pension in his later years before he died in 1839. The only mention of family in the pension application is the statement that "all his children are grown and have left him", no mention of a wife (suppose she was dead) and certainly no mention of any parents. I'd even settle at this point for some of his siblings if he had any because I might find his parents that way. If there is anyone who has any information out there about him that I have not already corresponded with privately (or if I have and you have more recent discoveries) please let me know. I would dearly love to track this man back further. Also, on another note I'm also looking for confirmation that Amanda Booth Ault was really a Booth. In the Knox county marriages she is listed as "Amanda Hainey". The Jamie Ault Grady book on the Aults (my main line) states that this was a clerical error because the clergyman was named Hainey. That may be but I have not found anything else that ties Amanda to Nancy and Joseph - there is suppose to be a letter that some descendant has to prove that Nancy Lilburn lived with John and Amanda Ault in her later years and died there and this letter supposedly makes it clear that she was Amanda's mother, but I have not seen this letter or a transcript of this letter so I really cannot count that as proof until I see it (which I doubt I will since I don't know who has it). Evidently at the time this was enough for DAR to let Jamie in, but the rules are somewhat stricter now and while I can prove my lineage back to Michael Ault (another Rev. War veteran) I want to be able to prove my line back to Andrew Lilburn as well. If anyone can help me I would be most appreciative. Thanks much Suzanne Pratt Surnames: Ault, Boothe, Lilburn, Ramsey, Spickard, Huff, Nelson, Ford, Hampton, Free, Queen, Williams, Thomas, Pratt, Smith, Stanfield

    3. Don't think I posted a query this particular way before. Am seeking any information as to the parents of James Tennessee Adams, born 1835 in Carter or Washington County, TN. Looking for information also about his wife Louisa Jane Orr, born 1833. Also need any information about O.B. (Obidiah?) Adams, born circa 1860, possibly in Knoxville, TN who worked as a railroad blacksmith in Bristol VA in 1900. As to Stroup linage, Male line traced back to Wythe County VA mi 1700s, hence to Abingdon, then East Tennessee after Civil War. I have several reference books re Wythe County in the early years in case others have roots there - there was a sizeable German contingent that moved from Wythe County to East Tennessee in the early 1800s. Thanks, Glenn Stroup

    2. I am a descendent of the Broyles (various spellings), Resers and Yeagers that lived in Washington County in the area around of Limestone beginning in the late 1700s. My 6th great grandfather Solomon Yeager settled in Limestone and moved on to White County in about 1820 turning his land over to his son, Daniel Yeager. Solomon's wife was Daniel married his cousin Susannah Yeager from Kentucky. Both my Yeager Y-DNA and my Yeager mtDNA go back to this couple. These families came from Germany to the colonies in 1717 and settled in what is now Madison County, VA. After a couple generations in VA, I ended up being related to many of these families which seemed to have followed each other out of VA in to Kentucky, Tennessee and on to Missouri where my father grew up in Urbana. I am very interested in what Linda Crawford is researching because of these connections. Corlee Ann Morris

    3. Thanks Nancy! My line is as follows: Peggy Reynolds & Andrew Crawford Samuel Crewford Sr. & Nancy Forgey Nancy Crawford & William McMunn Nancy Martha McMunn & Ruffin Whitehead Mary Jane Whitehead & Mark Reynolds Samuel Reynolds & Ada Cooper According to my uncle who has been doing research on our Reynolds family, our Reynolds line had left North Carolina by 1790 and settled in Tennessee. I am forwarding your Reynolds info to my uncle and will ask him to email you if he has come across a connection to your line. Who knows we could be distant cousins. 2. Telette and Nancy, I have been searching for a Roberts that came from TN/ALA to TX some time after 1840. Not sure of his first name, suspect it to be Josiah. He had children Joel, Green and possibly daughter Nancy. Could I possibly get at least the name and dob of the Roberts you have that went to ARK and TX? Thanks, Sandi in TX Searching for Cunningham, Stanley, Cox, Simpson, Roberts, Teague, Whited/Whitehead, Lewis, Davis, Hicks, Routon and many more

    1. Reply RE Stanton family in Washington County
    2. Sheila Hutchison
    3. I think my message sent earlier today got lost in the traffic on the list today so I am sending it again. Sherry, Robert Stanton who married Sarah Ellen Templin is our Robert Stanton. Robert was 7 years of age and living with his mother Polly Stanton age 30, Elizabeth age 20, and brothers James W. & Samuel M. Stanton (twins) age 9 months in the 1850 Washington County, TN census. (Don't have my notes in front of me but from memory believe this ages are correct) Their father, Beverly Staunton, (according to Samuel M.'s death certificate) is not shown in the census so we have to assume that he is deceased. Robert's mother is listed as Paullia "Boyles" Staunton on Samuel's death certificate. We feel certain that she was a Broyles and not Boyles. I have a copy of Robert Stanton's death certificate which shows both of his parents as "Unknown". My husband and I have been researching the families of James W. & Samuel M. Stanton since March of 2001. We have located descendants of Robert Stanton living in Oregon but as of yet have not contacted them. I have been in contact with more than one Templin family researcher and they have been unable to give me any information on Robert Stanton or his family. We do know that the Stanton's came into Tennessee via North Carolina and feel strongly that they may have a direct link to Robert Stanton from England. With help from Sevier County historian, Sam Maner, we were able to track the Stanton family back to the early 1820's in North Carolina. It appears that Robert's father, Beverly, was married in North Carolina and that Robert was born there. Beverly's first wife must have died and Beverly then married Polly (Paullia) Broyles who is the mother of the Stanton twins. She could also be the mother of Robert but if so that would put a 7 year age difference between he and the twins with no other children in between. Elizabeth who is living with Polly I believe may be Robert's older sister and child of Beverly by his first marriage. All of this of course is speculation since we have been unable to find family bibles or documents for Robert's family. James W. Stanton is my husband's gggrandfather so Robert Stanton would be his ggg uncle. Last August, my husband, Dan, & I were lucky enough to find a book on Ebay titled "Our Ancestors the Stanton's. As I am sure you know , this book was privately published by William Henry Stanton in 1922. William Henry Stanton is a descendant of Robert Stanton who was born in England in 1599. We are hoping to uncover a clue in the early 1800's to tie our Stanton's into this line. I have a private Myfamily.com website dedicated to the research of our Stanton twins and we host a Stanton family reunion at our home each fall. Are you from the Templin or Stanton side? We are always thrilled when we locate another member of our Stanton family and look forward to sharing more information with you. 2. All this sniping back and fourth is becoming ugly... It overshadows the posts of the members who are trying to use it. I wish that this matter can be sorted out and be done with soon. Thank you, Hubert
