Who is in your NELSON family. Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 21, 2000 1:13 AM Subject: Re: [TNWASHIN] NELSON > I have some West's in my family who married into the Crecelius family. Could > there be a connection? MHS >
The easiest soap I've made is from Crisco or some other brand of shortening. 3 pounds of Crisco (1 can), 6 oz of lye (you can buy red devil lye in store next to drano) 12 oz water. Melt crisco in enamel or stainless steel pan. pour cold water in glass bowl and slowly add lye while stirring with wood spoon. Stir till water is clear. When crisco and lye water are warm to touch, pour lye into crisco while stirring. Stir until you get a trace. Trace is when it thickens to the point where you can drop some of the mix back in to itself and it leaves a trail. Pour into mold, and set in warm place for 24 hours, then cut. Let cure for about 2 to 3 weeks. There are many soap recipes on the internet. Just go to a search engine and type in soap recipes, and a bunch of site will show up. I made this with my 9 year old grandson for a pioneer project. I made sure both of us had on eye covers and rubber gloves, just in case any splashed, but it didn't. It was fun. Kathy
According to the book "Housekeeping in Old Virginia" published in 1879, lye was made from green wood ashes. I can well remember when my mother used lye soap for laundry, baths and shampoo and will testify to the fact that it was terrible stuff. Grace Dotson

Actually, my I said my mother used Crisco for pie crusts and baking, my caregiver used the fat drippings from whatever my mom had (stored in old Crisco or Coffee cans) for soap. Janet (Baugh) Hunter
I have some West's in my family who married into the Crecelius family. Could there be a connection? MHS
My Mother made head cheese. As a child I didn't like it but later did, it made a real good sandwich, wish I had some now.MHS
Do have the recipe for the lye soap? My Mother used to make it and I helped but I can't remember how to make it? I had asked my sister before she passed away but she couldn't remember either. I used to buy lard when I was first married to make the pie crust, it was the best, I used it for years. Mary Helen

Thanks, Buzz. It's a relief to see that it's apparently back to normal. I appreciate your message. Jean At 02:58 PM 2/19/00 -0500, you wrote: >I received your message in Texas >Buzz
