My gggreat grandfather was Labron PITCOCK b. 1809 TN married to Elizabeth CHAPMAN. Labron's father was John PITCOCK married to Mary FISHER on Feb.15, 1791 in Berkeley County, VA. minister- Moses Hoge. I am looking for John PITCOCK's birth place and date. ANY info on his parents would be greatly appreciated. FOR THE RECORD. I have been quoted on rootsweb as saying that John's father is Stephen PITCOCK of Penn. I have never said this. I told a few fellow PITCOCK researchers I was trying to make a connection but NEVER could. I have read several places where PITCOCK researchers have found a connection from John to a Thomas PITCOCK of Penn. I would be VERY interested in knowing about this. I have been researching the book "History of THE PIDCOCK FAMILY and Association", the PIDCOCK genealogy, and also gone to Bucks Co. Penn. several times to see if I could work my way thru the opposite direction. Always willing to share ANY info I have with ANYONE. Would really like to make the connection with the PITCOCKS to the PIDCOCKS of Bucks Co. Penn. since it seems so apparent. Thank you in advance. Gary Pitcock (formerly from Monroe Co. Did pitcock start a cockfight? :-) Seriously though, I haven't seen a single message coming through TNWASHIN-L all day. I missed it. :-( I wonder if my own post will come through... -Bev ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: 24 February, 2000 12:25 PM > Greetings. Does anyone remember the song in the early 50's--"Grandma's Lye Soap"? Here's a line or so " Do you remember Grandma's Lye soap, Good for everything in the home, But the secret was in the scrubbing, It didn't suds, It didn't foam" Gail from NC

May I add that I read somewhere that they tested the lye with a feather and if it ate the feather, it was strong enough. My grandmother used it on her hair. No wonder it was so straight!!! She kept her jet black hair until she died at 86. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Monday, February 21, 2000 3:16 PM Subject: Re: [TNWASHIN] Soap Making >According to the book "Housekeeping in Old Virginia" published in 1879, lye >was made from green wood ashes. >I can well remember when my mother used lye soap for laundry, baths and >shampoo and will testify to the fact that it was terrible stuff. >Grace Dotson > >

Lye comes from running water through wood ashes. I have no idea how they knew if the lye water was strong enough. My mom said that their soap was made from pig fat, not beef tallow, due to the fact that all their cows were milk cows. According to the soap information that I have, pig fat makes soap harder, but it doesn't suds as well as beef fat. There are all kinds of fancy soap recipes to be had on the internet, and lots of people really like making and getting the hand made soaps. Kathy

I used to save my bacon drippings for my mother to make lye soap from. It turned out real white and pretty. Couldn't smell the bacon........Carolyn
I have some info on George Kindle/Kendall d. 1795 Washington Co TN m. Barbara Crecelius, their families & sources.. Glad to exchange and to learn more about Kindel, Kindle, Kendall. Good luck and adios from Fred in Folsom CA
You're coming through in East Ridge Tennessee. Regards, Bill Orton
Thanks Jean, I looked at the information you sent but can't make a connection, although there probably is one. I have mainly concentrated on trying to learn where my Harrells, Herrells etc. who lived just over the mountain from Carter, Washington and Unicoi Counies, TN. came from.. This family was there in what became Mitchell co., N.C., in 1789 I'm sure, but I can't find where they came from.. I have learned that all the Harrells, Herrells, Harrolds etc. who moved west very early (1750-1850) were from either southeastern VA.-N.C. or Northern Va..Frederick-Augusta counties.. I don't know which area My Hugh Herrell (Harrold) came from but suspect he came from Northern Va.. The Harrells tended to move with the frontiers to all parts of the country and it seems a lot of them were people who were Wagon Makers, Stonemasons and probably Miners, who did not own much property.. Today many of them are teachers, seven children from one family in Mitchell county, N.C. graduated from Appalachian State at Boone, N.C... and I have found many others across the country.. In earlier times several were preachers beginning in southeastern, Va. and going into Arkansas and preaching and teaching in Indian Schools.. I have found this to be a very interesting family even if I haven't been able to make a lot of connections, but I keep searching, and hoping! Thanks Again, G. Lee Hearl (formerly Herrell, Herrall, Heral, Herald etc.)
