Hi Jean, I don't know of any Bowmans who ended up in Izard County, AR, but there are a LOT of Bowmans from Washington County, so it's entirely possible that one or more of them did. There's even a Bowmantown near Johnson City. I looked up Miles, Preston, and Ervin/Irving BOWMAN in the History of Washington County, but there were none listed. Unfortunately there are too many Bowman's listed to give you the references for all of them. There was one reference to Arkansas in the Bowman family write-ups, but the reference is probably too late to be connected to your Bowman's. A MARTIN, descendant of a NECESSARY, descendant of a BOWMAN moved with his wife to Hot Springs Arkansas in 1934. I also looked up Mayfield and found several references to Mayfield: Two Mayfields show up here; "In 1835 a group of Washinton County citizens met in Jonesborough and 600 of them signed a petition asking the state to furnish financial aid to make "internal improvements," their definitionof a railroad through Washington County. Persons signing: Charles MAYFIELD James MAYFIELD Other references to Mayfield: "Laura C. Stout married 23 August 1904, Leander Waston Mayfield (1871-1957) "Seth Quee Waddill married America Mayfield, remained in Madison County, TN" No date specified for either party, but their children were born between 1848 and 1859. "By the late 1770's and early 1780's, other settlers began moving into the land along Cherokee Creek. Included among the early landowners were Moses Brooks, William Cannon, John Hunter, Sr., John Hunter, Jr., John Bayless, William murphy, Aaron Lewis, Ambrose Hodges, Robert Rogers, James Wray, William Thornton, Micajah MAYFIELD, Frederick Anderson........" more listed. that's nothing compared to whats been going on here in southern california.. In the city of Compton they've been diggin up the graves and putting in new people.. reusing the graves as they say.. The state had to close the cemetary and take it over and clean it up.. of course an investigation is still ongoing... that's why I decided to have both my parents cremated when they passed away for in some places you can not even trust your local cemetaries..which is sad.. When it comes to money some people just really don't care do they.. Dear June, I am seaching for wills for settlements, etc. for the period of 1806 - 1817 for a Simpson. My g-g-g grandfather Henry Simpson was left an orphan in 1817 at age 11 in Greene Co., Tn, but from his activities in later life, he may have had connections with Washington Co., TN Simpsons. Would you please check for anything that might fit with this possiblility? I am wondering if Henry's father died and his mother moved to Greene Co., TN after her husband's death and maybe remarried. I found a connection with Ellis King, who owned the land Henry sold in 1831 as far back as 1805 and 1810. Thank you for any help you can find. Hi Sam, There are a pile of Bowman's in the book, and most likely your kin. Unfortunately, your ggrandfather isn't listed so I couldn't tell from the book which Bowman family he might fit into it. If you learn who his parents were it might be possible to connect him to the Bowman families outlined in the book. -Bev ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> > I am curious as to what the names are of the Washington Co. Message text written by INTERNET:[email protected] >I'd love any Henley's you can find, if it's not too many! Particularly Henley's in the late 1700's to late 1800's. Especially, John Henley and his wife Catherine Henley, he died May 27, 1821 and Catherine died April 23, 1855. They were my ggg grandparents. I am trying to locate Henley's from this family particularly. Thanks for your help and let me know if you need more info. I am also looking for any of their children or parents, etc. Thanks, Jennifer Henley< Maybe this is yours: In "Washington Co., TN Wills 1777-1872", by Burgner, Reprint 1992: P. 7 "[Will of] James Henley Son John, heir to my land and livery. I sent the following info to you but your address as "vburd" is no good: Regarding the B&B, I do not know if it is still in operation. I have the following address which was still good a couple years ago: Mrs. Ruth Dorgan 1990 Davy Crockett Rd. Limestone, TN 37681 It is called the Snapp Inn (after the builder) and is located near the Davy Crockett home and park near Limestone, TN. I am sure that the house is still there even if it is no longer a B&B. I hope that you can stay there. I would love to learn more about the house. >From the Johnson City Press, Tuesday, April 11, 2000 Gravestones vandalized at city cemetery "It became a sadder day than usual at Oak Hill Cemetery Monday after Peter Naher, graveyard manager, arrived at work to discover an astonishing amount of vandalism done to over 50 gravestones there. Several grave markers at Oak Hill Cemetery of Johnson City, 205 Whitney St., were overturned an damaged sometime after 10 p.m. Sunday, according to Naher, manager of the cemetery... He estimated that damages totaling between $5,000 and $10,000 had mounted from the vandalism, which must have occurred sometime Sunday evening after the cemetery locked its gates at 8. Some of the headstones were overturned, others were cracked. I stopped counting after 50, Naher said... Fifteen of the cemetery's oldest gravestones were broken, Naher said. This cemetery was started in 1867 and is the burial site of Henry Johnson, founder of Johnson City... Some of the markers were cemented to a heavy base, and when the gravestones were turned over, the whole thing came up out of the ground." -- Betty Jane Hylton Co-coordinator, Washington County, TN TNGenWeb Page http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnwashin Editor, Watauga Association of Genealogists Bulletin
Iwill be coming to Tennessee sometime in June and would like to make reservations at the Bayless b7b as my ggrrandmother was a Bayless. can you tell me how I can make reservations with them?
My grandmother ,Mary E. Smith, is buried in Oak Hill cemetery. We were able to find this out, unfortunately for us hers was one of the many in this cemetery that are unmarked so it is even sadder that the ones there had to be torn up by vandals...Susan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Betty Jane Hylton" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, April 12, 2000 8:30 PM Subject: [TNWASHIN] Oak Hll Cemetery > >From the Johnson City Press, Tuesday, April 11, 2000 > > Gravestones vandalized at city cemetery > > "It became a sadder day than usual at Oak Hill Cemetery Monday after Peter > Naher, graveyard manager, arrived at work to discover an astonishing amount > of vandalism done to over 50 gravestones there. > > Several grave markers at Oak Hill Cemetery of Johnson City, 205 Whitney St., > were overturned an damaged sometime after 10 p.m. Sunday, according to > Naher, manager of the cemetery... > > He estimated that damages totaling between $5,000 and $10,000 had mounted > from the vandalism, which must have occurred sometime Sunday evening after > the cemetery locked its gates at 8. > > Some of the headstones were overturned, others were cracked. These books are out-of-print. The Jonesborough Genealogical Society are planning an update and reprint. Don't know when they will be ready. Several cemeteries have been transcribed by WAGS members in the last three years and posted on the Washington County, TN TNGenWeb Page http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnwashing -- Betty Jane Hylton Co-coordinator, Washington County, TN TNGenWeb Page http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnwashin Editor, Watauga Association of Genealogists Bulletin > > "Washington County, TN, Tombstone Inscriptions Plus Genealogical Notes" by > Charles M.
