Hi Sam, The "History of Washington County, Tn - 1988" is one large - large book. Besides the county history, it contains family history for 'hundreds"? of Tenn. families that have chosen to add their family history to the book. They are in alphabetical order and contain two or three hundred years of family history if the family has researched back that far - You need to ask for a specific surname and/or family name when requesting info. I believe the book sells now for about $55-60.00 thru the Museum in Jonesborough, TN. Jan W.

They have a multitude of TN land records, many of which are available on microfilm, and I think some have been printed and are on their shelves. Sorry I can't be more explicit, but can't seem to find my notes re: land records. The library is right downtown Nashville, and everyone is extremely helpful there. June
Still trying to find Rebecca TAYLOR. She was born about 1819 in NC, married Joseph BELOMY in Washington Co. 6 Feb 1833. They then moved to Scott Co. VA where they had 9 children, George, James, William, Nancy, John, Margery, Joseph, Henry, & Harvey. They later moved to Caldwell Co. Missouri. Stories have come down that Rebecca might have been either Cherokee or Melungeon, but no proof on any of this. Want to know who her parents and siblings were. Kathy in Pleasant Hill, OR (where it rains a lot)
Sarah Margaret PETERS BAYLESS - where did you come from and where did you go? Sarah was born in TN in about 1843. Was living in home of Reece/Rees BAYLESS, the Cherokee Baptist Church pastor in 1850. She married Rees' grandson Robert 29 Apr 1861, in Washington co. TN. She had Susan Loretta 13 Jun 1862 in Jonesboro. And then like Houdini - she disappeared. I have searched high and low for her for 20 years now. I sure would like to find out more about her. Thanks, Kathy Awbrey in Pleasant Hill, OR [email protected] http://msnhomepages.talkcity.com/WindowsWay/kawbrey/
Hi Elizabeth, I hope you don't mind, I'm responding to your request for FITZGERALD information to the list so any other interested researchers will also have access to the information. There are quite a few entries for Fitzgerald.... The main entry is a write-up on the Fitzgerald-Brown Family: "The Fitzgeralds in America are from Ireland, Tennessee, and Virginia. George Fitzgerald (born 1755) applied for a Revolutionary pension, 1819 and later received $8 a month. James, son of George purchased a farm in Washington county, Tennessee from Jonoathan Tipton, 1788. He was on the 1787 Tax List. He married c1810 in Virginia, Jane Robinson. They settled in Washington County, Tennessee, 1811. The were divorced 1854 (there were some children of this marriage names unknown.) James married secondly Susannah Milburn. They had a son Richard Fitzgerald. James married thirdly in 1858, Rhoda Ford. Richard received a pension 1893 for his services in the Civil War (SCA). Richard married Amanda chapman/Chatman. They were buried Shell cemetery, Piney Flats, Tennessee. Their children: 1. Elizabeth 2. Lulu (14 april 1871-12 January 1941) 3. Bige (1 Feb 1874 - 2 Aug 1967 4. Annie (18 April 1878 - 11 May 1956 5. ? 6. Mary (28 May 1882 - 27 October 1925) 7. Julie (born 27 March 1886) 8. Ida _____ end (my) transcript______ The article doesn't end there, it does go on to name these children's children and give some ancestry information on the BROWN family. Most of the subsequent FITZGERALD entries are for people born in the 1900's. Let me know if this is the information you seek, I'll transcribe the rest for you (two more pages of names-dates). Other pre-1900 FITZGERALD information: "On August 23, 1784, a meeting was held at the courthouse in Jonesborough...... (snipped ) .... "On motion of Mr. Cocke, whether for or against forming ourselves into a separate and distinct state, independent of the State of North Craolina, at this time, it was carried in the affirmative. "On motion of Mr. Kennedy, the yeas and nays were taken on the above question. Yeas - Mr. Tirril, Samms, North, Taylor, Anderson, Houston, Cox, Joseph Wilson, Trimble, Reese, John Anderson, Manifee, Christian, Carnes, A. Taylor, Fitzgerald, Cavit, Looney ......" (A Fitzgerald apparently voted for the creation of the "The State of Franklin" Search th web for historical information, you can find a lot of background on the subject) "The State Historical Marker on State Route 36 tells of the founding of the Boones Creek Church of Christ in 1825. For 162 years this church has been a vital part of the community......... <cut> The following surnames are among those found on the church rolls from 1834 to 1860: ........ FITZGERALD ......." "Hales Chapel Christian Church began as the result of a revival held in 1886 at Leab's Store, located near Buffalo Ridge. .... Names of early members included: Bacon, Barry, .....FITZGERALD......" There are quite a few references to FITZGERALD in the Index, but they are just single name entries in other people's biographical information. If you'll give me specific names you are researching I'll check to see if those persons are listed. Unfortunately I don't have the Cemetery book you referred to, but I know there are people on the list who do, perhaps if you'll post your request to the list, a Genealogy Angel might look it up for you. :-) -Bev
Bev: I was thrilled with the FITZGERALD information even though it is a collateral line.I believe that George and my direct line are brothers but lack proof at this time. I am searching for WILLIAM, JOHN or ISHAM FITZGERALD in Washington County in that same time frame ( late 1700's--early 1800's ). All sources catagorize the Fitzgeralds as Irish and yet I wonder why, if they were directly from Ireland , the men were given English names. Were George and William common names amongst the Irish in the 1700's ? Thanks again. Elizabeth [email protected]
Could I get information you come across on Johnothan Tipton,I am decended thru Meshac and Elizabeth Clark Tipton. Thanks E.Hollifield
Greetings. I am looking for anything that might connect John PITCOCK to Thomas PITCOCK, both of who were in Washington Co. Tenn. John PITCOCK is mentioned in the book "Tennesseans before 1800-Washington Co" as paying taxes in 1793, 1794, 1797, and 1798. Thomas PITCOCK is in "Early Tennessee Tax Lists" as paying taxes in 1817 in Washington Co. Tn. I have copies of land deeds of John PITCOCK in 1803 selling land to Thomas HUNT at Boon's Creek. Also John PITCOCK selling in 1809 to Henry ISENBERG at Boon's Creek. Thomas PITCOCK sold land to Baltis HAMMER in 1800 at Little Sinking Creek. I have been told that after Thomas PITCOCK died that John PITCOCK moved on to Monroe Co. KY. John PITCOCK is my fourth great grandfather and that is where I end in the research of my line. Looking for "anything" that might tie these two together. Would enjoy also enjoy hearing where Boon's Creek and Little Sinking Creek are located now. I sent a check yesterday for the "History of Washington Co". Thanks! Gary Pitcock, Connecticut

Jean, could you share a little history of Izard Co., AR and that part of the state with the list? We have found the Elijah Hylton (Floyd Co., VA & Washington Co., TN) was out there in 1859 obtaining land. What was happening about that time in AR? Later, Elijah's son Montgomery and a daughter, Sarah Hylton Sams and her family moved to AR. It seems from the discussion on this list, that several families from Washington Co., TN went to AR. June, Thank you for searching and thank you for sending those you found. I have seen them and have copies, but I really thought Washington Co., TN was where Henry went after being release at age 12 from service to James McPherron with the understanding that he had to leave Greene Co., TN in 1818. Do you have any suggestions where to look for something that would show that he received land upon turning 21 in Greene Co., TN? I have gone through the minutes of the Greene Co., TN Court for 1827, 1828, 1829, & 1830 because it wasn't until 1830 when he was listed with 125 acres of land. I haven't found any Simpson will between 1806 and 1817 in Greene or Settlement. Well, I'm still looking for anything to do with Alexander S. Brownlow and particularly, his first wife's name. I have seen all the talk about cemetery listings and even asked someone to search a book for "Brownlow" on cemetery listings for Washington Co., Tn. but no luck. I have been looking for this woman's name for two years and have been consistently unable to find it. She married him sometime before 1841 and she died in 1847 before August. She is buried somewhere in Washington Co., Tn around Jonesboro or Johnson City. The cemetery listings on the Washington Co. page don't have her listed so I am still stuck.. Any help would be greatly appreciated...really ! Thanks, Pam
I am told the Union Brethan Church was outside of town called Headstown or Headtown. It was near Johnson city I think. I am looking for Samuel Phillips who was murdered about 1921 in a section of town called Potlick which no one understood why he would be there. I am told he is buried in Union. thank you for all the help, vicky http://community.webtv.net/bartlett3/Devon

I had my son cremated in 1986, and his ashes disposed of 'outside the Golden Gate', only to find out twelve years later that it MAY not have happened when over 5,000 cremains were found in rented storage lockers. The pilot who was supposed to have released the ashes for disposal [a former Coroner, I might add], later committed suicide rather than face those of us who are still wondering where our loved ones are! My suggestion is that you take possession of the cremains and handle the disposition of them yourself.
Vicky, This may refer to the Church of the Brethren--they have also been known as Dunkards, Dunkers and Tunkers. There are several different Brethren groups, but the Church of the Brethren established the first church in TN in Washington Co, probably in 1800. It was in the Knob Creek community. In 1830 a congregation was established in Limestone. About 1902 a church was built near Boones Creek. Much later there was a Johnson City church and one called Liberty, which recently split from the COB and became independent (?). These are some places to try. Hi Sam, I see so many surnames in Izard County, which I have also seen in Washington County, TN. Such as FERGUSON, BALLARD, BOWMAN, COMBS, and so on. It certainly makes one wonder if these folks eventually made the move together.
