Stephen MITCHELL : and Dorothy (WEST?), ca 1820, named a son Daniel West : MITCHELL. : : Dennis West in Knoxville, TN : Dennis et al, This is NOT the answer to the posted question, however, some random "West" thoughts are offered here. In an 1839 indenture, Thomas M. Smoot conveys to his sons, Daniel and William Smoot a tract of land which Thomas purchased from Adam West. http://www.usgennet.org/family/smoot/tn/warren/1839-04-26.html I place this tract as being along the south side of the Barren Fork at the junction of Old Shelbyville Road and Old Well Road. This tract contains the stone foundation of a old gravehouse (no readable stones however). http://www.tngenweb.org/darkside/grave-house.html This tract later sold to the Andersons. http://www.usgennet.org/family/smoot/tn/warren/1850-05-24.html The gravehouse is known as the Anderson Cemetery. Gravehouses in Middle Tennessee are know at least as early as the 1830s. Smoot family tradition identifies the gravehouse as a Smoot burial place. I speculate that the gravehouse could have contained the remains of West, Smoot, and/or even Anderson family members (there was another Anderson Cemetery on the Issac Anderson, later Wm. Smoot property about 1 mile west of the gravehouse). Two Smoots could have been buried in the gravehouse, both dying in the 1840s before the tract was sold to the Andersons. Much later a Smoot bought back a portion of the orginal tract. I believe that in the mid 1990s, the tract was owned by woman named Bouldin (maybe the mother of Martha Holt, the woman who was greatly involved in the Warren Cemetery books) . In this area are a number of older families where intermarriage was possible: Anderson, Brown, Smoot, West, etc. In the 1837 will of John West (Warren Co. Will Book I, pp. 196-197), he names his wife Mary, an apparently married daughter, Ivy Brown, and apparently unmarried daughters, Nancy West, Polly West, and the youngest, Elizabeth Emaline West. (Note to Ann Turner: did you ever find the maiden name of Emaline who married your John Brown by 1850?) Also named are his sons, Adam West, John West, and William West. The sons received land. It is possible that Adam (the oldest son as listed in the Will ) received as his portion, a tract that he sold to Thomas M. Smoot. In the 1839 indenture, Thomas M. Smoot states "... purchased from Adam West for which land I hold his obligation for title ... " That might indicate that the ink was not dry on the probate transfer of John West's land to Adam. Taking a jump in time, Daniel West was buried in French Cemetery, death date 1860. William Smoot, son of Thomas M. Smoot, was Daniel West's executor. (Warren Co. Will Book IV, pp. 310-310). An 1868 Settlement reports that James Petty was a son-in-law of the dec'd, Daniel West. (Same Book, pp.389-390) "McMinnville at a Milestone" by Walter Womack, 1960 (p. 257) lists Daniel West as a private in the company of A. Rains, Capt. in the Second Regiment, West Tennesse Militia., War of 1812- serving 20 Sep 1814 - 31 Dec 1814. Could Daniel West have been a brother to John West? Fred Smoot
Fred: Thanks for the 'random' WEST information. I have nothing on John, Daniel, or Adam WEST. The following WEST male heads of household were in Warren Co. pre 1850. Peter WEST John WEST Adam WEST Daniel WEST Anderson WEST William WEST James WEST (does anyone have others?) One genealogy lists the wife of Stephen MITCHELL as Dorothy WEST - this MITCHELL family was in Warren Co. at the same time 1820 -50. All of these men appear to be of about the same generation, born abt 1780 -1800 + or -. I am descended from James and have exchanged data with descendents of Anderson and William WEST. We have not been able to find a connection between these families. We do not have parents or siblings of any of the above men. I have found nothing on the origin of Peter, Adam, John, or Daniel WEST. If anyone else is researching these families, or has any clue as to their origins we would be most grateful. Dennis WEST in Knoxville, TN
It would appear that Daniel West was the only living Warren County West born outside TN, re: 1850 census. Of course, the other 1850 Warren Wests were much younger than Daniel. They look like the next generation. District 10, Household Number 1123 Daniel West, Age 69, Labourer, Born Va. Ball park figure, born 1789, considered a Warren County Pioneer, served from Warren, 1814, etc. I'd bet a buck that Daniel and a few other Wests came from VA. ca 1808-1814, settled Warren Co. TN. I'd start looking in Old Dominion.
