I have actually seen records where the name was spelled both ways. Louisa and others can be seen in my 1850 census project database hosted at http://www.my-ged.com/apturner. Louisa's mother is Martha Brown. I've often wondered how she fit in with the Brown family I'm researching -- whether she could be a daughter of William Brown. Do you know anything about that?
