I am leaving Thursday for a weekend trip to my father's in LaFollette, Campbell Co, TN. I plan on being in McMinnville, Warren Co, TN early Friday morning. Can someone on the list tell me where to go to make my trip worth it. I have never been there before. I will be researching JONES and SMITH's believe it or not. lol. I will be making a trip for pictures to the Woods Cemetery. This is the location I have. This cemetery is located in Northern Warren County, TN off Hwy 287 about 3mi NE of Centertown, TN. From Centertown take 287 (Green Hill Rd.) North. Go about 3mi and turn left onto Frisco Road, then right onto Woods Cemetery Road. From McMinnville, TN take State Hwy 56 (Smithville Hwy) North out of McMinnville. Turn left onto 287 (Green Hill Rd). Go about 1 mi and turn right onto Frisco Rd, then right onto Woods Cemetery Road. Is this good or anyone have a better one? I will be looking for the first wife of Isaac L. Carroll Jones, Sr. I hope he is buried near both of his wives. But if not, where is the best place to go for genealogy research? I need Marriage Records, Obits, Deeds, Military Records, Ect...... Knowing this family, what other cemeteries are close by the WOODS CEMETERY? They need to be old. His father died 1843 and mother after 1860. Any suggestions? Helen
About your trip --- I traveled back to White County TN a few years ago and someone tipped me off about a funeral home that had lots of old records -- they would let you search thru their old books. These books held more information than the death certificates did. It was really great! Maybe there's something like that?? These funeral homes even told me about other cemeteries that I was unaware of that had my family surname in. They also provided me with the best map and the best directions as to finding the cemeteries. I would also be sure to visit the courthouse. When I went back to TN I made the mistake of assuming that the deeds would be microfilmed and that it wouldn't be worth the time and money to copy the ones from the books at the courthouse in TN -- I assumed I could do this at home. I wish I had done more research before I went. If I had only known that the deeds are not microfilmed -- there are abstracts of Deeds but not the actual deeds themselves which name the owners of neighboring property and such. You might also look at finding or visiting a Family History Center -- I think there is one in Warren County. The Family History Library in Putnam County had lots of books that were very helpful. I found lots of good info from the family books and the cemetery books that they had there. Also the staff at the White County Library was very helpful. They were quite knowledgable about genealogy and cemeteries. Well -- good luck and enjoy your trip! Helen, If you have time and its open you might also want to stop by the Justin Potter Library in Smithville. Tommy Webb has done great work over the years and the library maintain family files based mainly on his research. As far as I know those files are available nowhere else. Tommy's work mainly focuses on DeKalb, but it often crosses county lines, especially around the Short Mountain area. HI Brent, My G-grandparents were Hasel Haswell Cantrell and Sarah Malinda Jones. They lived in DeKalb Co, TN. Do you have any info on them? Thanks. I would go to the Court House, which is on Main St. and they will be able to help you with land records, marriage, wills etc. I have relatives buried in Wood cemetery, and wonder if you would have enough time to take some photos for me? If so I really would appreciate it, and be more than willing to pay for expenses and postage. Their names are J. M. Wood, b. Mar 21, 1851 - d. Mar. 21 1928. Lizzie Bomar, b. June 2, 1851 - d. Dec. 30 1912, w/o J.M. Wood. Mrs. E. A. Bomar, b. Apr. 22, 1824 - d. Sept. 30 1892 aged 68 5m ??d (broken marker, difficult to read) Thanking you in advance. Another tip, the Funeral Home discussed in another email would be Highs Funeral home, and it is located on the west side of McMinnville. It would be the oldest funeral home still active today. Also the Liberty Cemetery that is south of McMinnville is very old and a lot of my relatives are buried there. Mt. View Cemetery is located in the town limits if I remember correctly. That is where the Highs (from the funeral home) are buried. Hope this helps.
