    3. Masked Men Took William and Victor Hillis from the County Jail and Hung Them at Shellsford Between 12 and 1 o'clock last Saturday night a band of about fifteen masked men rode quietly to town and proceeded to the Jail, where they demanded of Jailor James Earles the delivery to them of William and Victor Hillis. Mr. Earles at first refused to deliver the keys, but the men seemed so determined to have the parties wanted that he thought resistance useless and foolish and handed the keys over to them. The mob then went to the cell in which the prisoners were confined and took charge of them. One of the prisoners attempted to defend himself with a bed slat, but was soon overpowered and the two brothers, partly clad, were mounted on horses, riding behind some of the party, and the cavalcade moved orderly and noiseless out of town. (p. 67) New Era Newspaper, McMinnville, TN, Thur 30 Apr 1896. There are more articles on this. Tombstones have recently been put up for both of them in, I believe, McElroy Cemetery, Van Buren County, TN. Charles Victor Hillis, 1873 - 26 Apr 1896 William L.S.J. Hillis, ca 1872 - 26 Apr 1896 Sons of Lawson H. Hillis and Amanda Sparkman, who are both buried McElroy Cem., Van Buren Co., TN William Carroll Martin, 28 Oct 1820 - 23 Aug 1894, married to Mary Polly Grissom, he was the son of David Martin and Nancy Cole, grandson of Charles Caffery Martin. He was attacked and killed. Two of his grandchildren were with him and one was injured, I believe. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Carol114jim@aol.com> To: <TNWARREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 15, 2006 12:49 PM Subject: [TNWARREN] Re: TNWARREN-D Digest V06 #94 > There was a Carroll Martin who lived in Van Buren County, TN. 3. Does anyone out there research the Bowlin/Boland/Bolin family of Warren Co? In particular, I have searched for the parents of Solomon W. Bolin/Bowlin who married Sarah Walker, prob dau of James H. She resided with a Nunley family prior to marriage, due to a bad relationship with step-mother. We believe Solomon to be a relative of Temperance, but no proof. Solomon died at Post Hosp #11 Nashville during the CW of smallpox. Gravesite unknown. In the pension applications, Woodlee's, Nunley's, Walkers all testified they lived near Sol all his life, as well as Sarah. Temperance is the only Bolin in the area of all these witnesses. Sarah and Solomon had 2 children prior to his CW service: Mary Elizabeth & Levi H. Any info appreciated. 3. I am a gr granddaughter of Emma Frances "Fannie" Hale Acuff whose sister Vesta was married to Victor Hillis. I may have asked this question before but I don't think I ever got an answer..or perhaps I missed the answer. I was wondering what happened to the widow and the child. --Marie At 05:10 PM 5/15/2006, you wrote: >Masked Men Took William and Victor Hillis from the County Jail and Hung >Them at Shellsford >Between 12 and 1 o'clock last Saturday night a band of about fifteen >masked men rode quietly to town and proceeded to the Jail, where they >demanded of Jailor James Earles the delivery to them of William and Victor >Hillis.
