Wilson Los =========================== I know that the above grant is a Tennessee grant based on a North Carolina warrant to a Samuel McPheters, who was more than likely the original NC veteran. If I can learn more about this Samuel McPheters - to whom the grant was given - then I may be able to learn more about where my Robert Gordon came from before Warren Co. Kindest regards, TAG

    3. **** To all to whom ye Presents shall come-GREETING. KNOW YE, That by virtue of part of Warrant No. 1724 dated the 13th day of January 1809. Issued by the commissioners of East Tennessee to Samuel McPheters unto which he is entitled by virtue of an entry made by him in John Armstrong's office of No. 1724 and Tendered on the 26th day of August 1809 by _______ as an occupant claim under the Act of 1807. Here is granted by the said STATE OF TENNESSEE, unto Robert Gordon assignee of the said Samuel McPheters. **** The description above shows that Samuel McPheters made an occupant claim. In essence, he was buying the land under 1807 Tennessee land laws. The "occupant claim" does indicate that the claimant McPheters was NOT a North Carolina Revolutionary War veteran. It shows that Robert Gordon entered the picture before McPheters received the grant on the tract. Gordon simply could have bought out McPheters. A hypothetical but common scenario would go like this. McPheters owes some part or perhaps all of $200.00 to the State of Tennessee for the 200 acres. Gordon, a stranger to McPheters, buys out McPheters and becomes McPheters' "assignee." Gordon then pays the State of Tennessee all the monies due on the tract. The state then grants Gordon perfect title to the tract. McPheters is out of the picture. The only significant variable to this is: was McPheters known to Gordon? Were they friends or even in-laws? Fred Smoot
