James Claud Martin was born in Feb. 1850 in Warren Co. the son of Raleigh and Leona (Safley) Martin. His mother Leona died between February and before the census taken that year. She was the daughter of Jesse & Phatha (Stiles) Safley. His father, Raleigh was born about 1822 and died in Warren Co. on 6 Feb 1868. He married 2nd, Anna Jones on 7 Dec 1855, they were the parents of 5 children: Samuel, Temperance Euphema, Eva, Lena A. and Raleigh. "Claud" married 17 Nov 1870 to Laura Northcutt who was born about 1853 in TN the daughter of James and Esther (Miller) Northcutt.
