I also think that he served in the 35th Tennessee Infantry in the civil war (aka 1st Tennessee Mountain Rifles or 5th Tennesseee Infantry, Provisional Army). He was born in about 1843, and married a woman named Celia (also from TN), about 1867. He moved to Kentucky sometime between 1870-1874. If anybody can find or help me find any pertinent records on him or his family, I'd appreciate it. I have census records on him from Kentucky, but nothing from Tennessee. *************************************************************************** This is an automatically-generated notice. 3. I'm wondering if your Brewer family may be connected to the Brewer family who settled in what is now Coffee County (was Warren until 1836), on the old stagecoach road towards Shelbyville, around 1805 from North Carolina? If I recall, it was Calvin Brewer and his wife, Nancy Toliver. I believe these Brewers were related to old Henry Brewer who was in Ashe County, NC in 1790 or 1800 census as "Bruir" or "Bruer". Nancy's mother was Tabitha (Howell) Brewer, sister to my 5th great grandfather George Brewer of Grayson County, Virginia. Also, William Hood, brother of Confederate General John Bell Hood, Commander of the Army of Tennessee (1864 - battles of Springhill, Franklin, and Nashville), is buried at Bascom Cemetery on the way to Viola, and his second or third wife was a Mary Brewer. I think she is buried with William Hood at Bascom cemetery. Hope this helps somewhat! I descend from George Brewer who died around 1722 in Brunswick County, Virginia and his wife, Sarah Lanier. 3. **** To all to whom ye Presents shall come-GREETING. KNOW YE, That by virtue of part of Warrant No. 1724 dated the 13th day of January 1809. Issued by the commissioners of East Tennessee to Samuel McPheters unto which he is entitled by virtue of an entry made by him in John Armstrong's office of No. 1724 and Tendered on the 26th day of August 1809 by _______ as an occupant claim under the Act of 1807. Here is granted by the said STATE OF TENNESSEE, unto Robert Gordon assignee of the said Samuel McPheters. **** The description above shows that Samuel McPheters made an occupant claim. In essence, he was buying the land under 1807 Tennessee land laws. The "occupant claim" does indicate that the claimant McPheters was NOT a North Carolina Revolutionary War veteran. It shows that Robert Gordon entered the picture before McPheters received the grant on the tract. Gordon simply could have bought out McPheters. A hypothetical but common scenario would go like this. McPheters owes some part or perhaps all of $200.00 to the State of Tennessee for the 200 acres. Gordon, a stranger to McPheters, buys out McPheters and becomes McPheters' "assignee." Gordon then pays the State of Tennessee all the monies due on the tract. The state then grants Gordon perfect title to the tract. McPheters is out of the picture. The only significant variable to this is: was McPheters known to Gordon? Were they friends or even in-laws? Fred Smoot
