Some of what you say rings a bell with me. There are certainly some connections between the McMahans and Browns. I am a descendant of the Revolutionary War soldier Robert Brown through his son William. I have heard (but seen no documentary evidence) that William married Laura McMahan. William had nine children (per the will of Robert Brown, which does not name them). I do believe that Redman Brown is one of the children, since he hangs around close to the next children I name. My ancestor John is one of them, along with Nathaniel and perhaps Jane, who married Stephen Banks. The last three I named ended up in Barry County, Missouri by the 1860 census. Robert Brown's daugher Rebecca definitely married Redman McMahan's son Jonathan. (If anyone knows about their descendants, I am trying to trace a straight female line for a mitochondrial DNA test. That would represent the line of Mrs. Robert Brown, said to be Elsie Lyons.) The name Sanders is very common in various lines of descent from Redman McMahan, including Jonathan and Rebecca Brown McMahan, so that is another strong clue. When you say that Sanders Brown was in Warren County in 1850, would that be under the name of William Brown? There is no Sanders Brown per se. If you have the name of his wife and/or children, I could check my database. Do you have any sons or other male relatives who still carry the name Brown? There is a Y-chromosome DNA project that has linked some descendants of Robert Brown with other Browns in Warren County. A DNA test would clinch a connection for you. I'd be willing to pitch in on the cost (actually, for anyone who believes he might be a descendant of William Brown). *************************************************************************** This is an automatically-generated notice. Hello Fellow Listmembers: I'm looking for the name of a gentleman who was a Deputy Sheriff for either Van Buren or Warren County in Dec. 1979 - Jan. 1980. It is possible he was not serving in this capacity during the above timeframe, but did so in the few years prior to this. He visited my grandfather in the hospital around Jan 1980 just prior to his death. The gentleman I'm interested in was named Elijah... his last name unknown. The information I have also states that Elijah was in ill health himself when he visited my grandfather, so he may not be alive today. My grandfather, the information says, made a "death bed" admission that he was Elijah's father. My grandfather fathered Elijah before he met and married my grandmother. Elijah is therefore my father's half-brother! If anyone has any information about Elijah... or any ideas how/where I might find info on Deputy Sheriffs for Warren/Van Buren County during this time frame please reply. Linda Farmer: if you are still on the list and see this... can you help me once more? :-) Thanks in Advance, Gary in Oregon e-Mail: Old_Salt@comcast.net
There was a James T. Kelton in DeKalb Co., near the Warren Co. line, during the 1870s & 1880s. He built a Dam on Sink Creek and used Water power to grind Corn and cut lumber from logs. Also to help prosess Cotton. The Postal Service put a Postoffice in his business in 1884. They named it Keltonburg and named him Postmaster. Keltonburg today is one of the Communities in DeKalb Co. One of their daughters, Sarah, was my great-grandmother. After the war this family came to Ohio. Does anyone know where Black Fox Camp is located? Apparently the Kelton family (before Wilson) bought this area -- it has some sort of natural water feature so it can possibly still be located. Also, this family has multiple "stories" about visiting with the Harrison cousins "over the mountain." (probably referring to the 1850s or 1860s) These were cousins to the US Presidents.
