Greetings, Since some of you are new to this list and may have subscribed through the RootsWeb gateway page and not the Warren County TNGenWeb gateway page, I will offer some TNGenWeb URLs that may help in Warren County research and beyond. I recommend that you visit the sites and read the information. Warren County TNGenWeb http://www.tngenweb.org/warren/ Since we have been dealing with land questions, there is this page within the Warren site that covers many Warren land issues: http://www.tngenweb.org/warren/warland.htm Statewide Land Subjects The Land of Our Ancestors http://www.tngenweb.org/tnland/ The Intruders. (Illegal settlers on Indian Lands in Tennessee.) http://www.tngenweb.org/tnland/intruders/ Indian Subjects First People of Tennessee and the American Southeast http://www.tngenweb.org/tnfirst/ Indian Land Cessions in the American Southeast http://www.tngenweb.org/cessions/ Tennessee has a rather convoluted land history. Add to that the Indian Land and how the white man seized it and we end up with a very interesting subject. Yes I will remember everything she tells me. I was 13 when my great grandmother died and I use to hear her talk about the old times but of course kids aren't going to listen to old people talk. I don't know how many times now I wished I had of sat down and listened. If I could only ask her some questions now or even to tell her how much I loved her. You can look at her pictures to see that there was indian blood in her right along with my grandmother. Christy
Tape record it, because you may forget some important thing that you feel now you won't forget---but you will!.<smile> Mamie ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, October 21, 2002 9:53 PM Subject: Re: [TNWARREN] Indian Reservation Yes I will remember everything she tells me. Christy, Hang on to every word your 85 year old tells you. The chronological order of her history may be a little mixed up in her memory at this time, but she is giving you clues to prove or disprove. Right now, be sure that you get names, places, and dates. It's very difficult to document the facts without that much of a lead. Good luck, Nancy in MO
Hi List, According to two family histories I received from different family members Willilam Riley Akers and his second wife Sara Elizabeth Barnes along with their son Thomas Akers are buried in Centertown Cemetery. They were moved from French Cemetery to Centertown Cemetery by their John Riley Akers. In reading Ann Turner GEDCOM on the Akers family she lists Mary Eleanor McKnight, William Riley Akers's first wife as being Majors cemetery Book 1 page 161 the same book and page number as William Riley Akers and his second wife Sarah Elizabeth Barnes. My question is Mary Eleanor McKnight Akers actually buried in this cemetery or elsewhere? Also is there a French cemetery in Warren County and where is it located? Is their anybody on this list researching the family of William Riley Akers and his brother Campbell C. Akers and his wife Jane unknown who are listed on the 1860 Warren County, TN census? Thanks for your help. JackieGet more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com
Christy, I wish you all the luck, It took me along time to find my Cherokee blood. Goodluck, Charlene
From what my grandmother said it was my great grandmother who was asked since according to them she had enough indian blood to be on a reservation. But she was born in 1898 so I wonder if my grandmother got it wrong on who it was. It could have been a great great grandmother. I need to talk to her some more to see. This is what you get in to when your grandmother is 85 years old and can't remember everything. If it was my great grandmother then that would possibly have been a little late for the reservation. I was just wanting to prove that there is cherokee indian blood in the line. I just haven't been able to by paper, just by word of mouth from my great grandmother years ago. Christy
If you can get a tape recorder going, as you ask these questions, you will not only have the information as she states it, you will have her voice on record, as she speaks. My mother is 89 and has been slipping for the past 3/4 years. I had tried to get the oral history from her, as best I can not only for me, but for the generations after me. (Try to get her to respond with their names and not pronouns or nicknames.) Mother would use nicknames. I knew who they were, but my grandchildren would not know the individuals by those names. If she has any pictures label them on the back, as she tells you who the individuals are, and the approximate year they were taken or the event. She maybe the only living person who can identify those individuals. Good Luck. Fred, I can not believe that I have not ever seen this page. It is really good and informative. I am putting it on Van Buren and Trousdale right this minute. It should be on every TNGenWeb site. Am assuming it is on Warren which I am in the process of going through carefully right now and trying to finish up the Bulletin.. BTW, can you help me she was born in 1863 in tenn and her ma is sallie and her pa was samuel what cemetery are they buried in? You are good. RE: Poles...and other terms. Thanks Fred for the tip on such a neat site--with a picture of the old chains, to boot. Nancy in MO
Paul, I read with interest the text of the old records you submitted. I have several relating to our folks in Warren County, and I've always wondered about the "poles." Could you give us a little lesson in this term, please. Nancy in MO
Christy, If you are able to find your grandmother on a copy of the actual census, it should tell whether or not she was Indian. One of the questions asked back then concerned color--with the choices being "White, Black, Indian." I have even seen some individuals listed as "M" for Mulatto. Nancy in MO
They started the paper work on moving the Indians in 1835. That was when a lot of Cherokee were asked to start signing up, My great-grandparents was asked at that time, but only one uncle went along, was sent on the trail of tears, the rest hid out in the mountains. He died in route. Charlene PS His name was Thomas Barnes
Hello List, Out of curiosity are there any Jesse Webb mar. Vina Green, family out there? Also, any Ferguson relatives. Hubbard L.Ferguson 1838 Tax List. C.J. Williams
