Thanks to all of you on the list that have responded to my request. I have 7 full days to research, and will include the McMinnville, and Nashville library in addition to the State Library. I will be reseraching the surnames: Cole, Hembree, Paris, and Solomon in Warren Co. Since I have never visited Tennessee, this will be a double treat. I really appreciate all your responses. Marge Van Hemert Bonita, CA (just north of T.J., Mexico)
There's a Days Inn about 1 b lock from the library.
You can go on line to the Tennessee State Library and Archives and see what they have. Ruby

My husband is a Hendrix/Hendrixson descendant, so we know first hand that the names are used interchangeably (also used is the spelling Hendrick/Hendrickson). In Cannon Co TN March 20, 1865 James Arnet married Sarah Hendrix. Can anyone help this lady? Over the holidays, a younger cousin brought me a box of her mother's photo albums, scrapbooks, loose pictures, etc. She remembers even less about our grandparents. Our grandfather is well-documented, but not our grandmother. I just recalled that, in looking at some old pictures of her family, my mother said that my grandmother's father was "a hillbilly doctor in Tennessee" and my grandmother served as his nurse. In one of the albums, I found a clipping from a newspaper about my great-grandfather, Dr. Arnett. But, it only calls him Dr. Arnett, with not first name. However, it does give where he lived, his wives, and children. The author stated that this was not meant to be a biographical sketch, but an appreciation in honor of a man who was her father's friend; a man who had been a friend to everybody in "our village", and who had spent his whole life trying to build up the community in which he was making his living. Her father was Dr. Reams. Both had "heavy practices" and were not rivals. Again, there was no first name given. Dr. Arnett attended medical lectures in Louisville in his native state of Kentucky. He followed some horse traders to Tennessee, liked it there, and stayed. He married Zana Grizzle, daughter of George Grizzle, the first sheriff of Cannon County. Zana died young and left him with a little son, Lige, who "lived his entire life in this community". (Since the name of the newspaper, date, etc. was not included in the clipping, I don't know which community or time frame this might be.) About the time of the Civil War, he had Smallpox, which left his eyes weak, but did not affect his working with medicine or driving at night. "About the close of the Civil War, he married Sarah Hendrixson, and settled at Short Mountain near the place where Womack's store now stands." "A few years later, he bought the house and farm of Harvey Patterson, now owned and occupied by Mrs. Hester Hale. Here Mrs. Sarah Arnett died in 1880 leaving 4 children, Jim, Joe, Candy, and Kate. Kate, now Mrs. Kate Martin of White county, is the only one still living." "The third time Dr. Arnett married Mrs. Roda Halderman. She wither her three children, Sam, Bob, and Emma (my grandmother) survived him. After his death, they moved to Texas." "Several years after his third marriage, he sold his property to Dr. Doyle and moved near Woodbury. A few years later he bought back his old house, and returned to Mechanicsville, where he spent the rest of his life." There is more to the article, with more about what he was like, including that he was a life long member of Short Mountain Methodist Church. On the back of the article, there is a listing of homes for sale, several in Eastland Heights, the home place of Eugene Powell on the Manchester Road, a house on Woodbury-Murfreesboro Road near Murfreesboro, a lot in Trail sub-division, 2 homes on College St., 2 acres in Woodbury, another house in Woodbury, 2 grocery stores in Cannon County, a new house on a large lot on McMinnville Rd, 2 lots on Eastland Heights, frontage on McMinnville ( the rest of that column is cut off). Under farms, there is a 350 acre farm belonging to T.L.Carter in the 11th district of Cannon County, a 260 acre farm in the second district of Cannon County, a 60 acre farm in the 8th district, a 95 acre grass farm in the 7th district, and a 104 acre farm in Rutherford County, near the Cannon County line. Below these is part of an ad for Buster Brown, and part of an ad for Kem-Glo, "an amazing new paint". The column is titled"Miss Mary's Column" by Mary Reams. I wondered if anyone might have any insight into the people or places mentioned. I thought that the real estate section might help to place the newspaper that this column might have appeared in. Due to the Buster Brown ad, I would think that it might have been the 40s or 50s, but I have no idea of the place, -perhaps McMinnville? I also found a clipping for Sam Arnett (Emma's brother) who died in Hearne, Texas. He was buried in Eagle Pass Texas. And survived by his wife Jessie. I have Emma Arnett born in McMinnville, TN Nov.2, 1884; died Nov. 17, 1965 in Ft. Worth, Texas, buried in Prairie Point Cemetery, Texas. She married James DeGraffenreid Miles Jr. in Kerens, Texas (his second marriage. He lost both his first wife and 2 infant daughters.) J.D. and Emma lived in Kerens, Powell, then moved to Waco, and back to the farm near Kerens. During WWII, they moved to Ft. Worth. They had 2 daughters, Emma Dee, who married Clyde Livingston; and Ellen Carolyn, who married Alfred Conitz of Calvert, Texas. Emma Dee and Clyde had 3 children, 2 sons and a daughter. Alfred and Ellen had 2 daughters. I know that there have been Arnett family reunions in Navarro county, Texas, that I attended years ago with my mother and her sister. But I was busy with my little son and didn't really make any contacts. I don't have any contact with them since my mother and her sister have both died. Maybe some of this will sound familiar to someone and they will be willing to share information Thanks so much for any insight or help. Cecelia Heinrich <[email protected]> Friday, January 03, 2003
Hi, On site of Bessie Thomison, there is Billy Bruce Christian and his wife, Margaret Turner. Margaret Turner is the sister of my 2nd great grandfather, Henry Thomas Turner. Their parents were Thomas Turner and Melvina (Elliott) Turner. Both of them are buried in the Smyrna Cemetery, also. I have most of the photos of my family's headstones, inculding Billy Bruce Christian's. Margaret and Billy Bruce Christian had 6 children- Bruce, Andrew J. (A.J.), Cleora + Elzie T. McGEE, Harriet, Ebb + Ella MYERS, Calhoun + Mary POWELL. Margaret was born April 28,1841 and died Nov. 10,1892, age 51. They were married 2-25-1861. Sherrydon
Marge, The Chamber of Commerce would be more than pleased to send you a map and address to the TN State Library. Larger cities you can go online and make requests outlining your specific needs. I wish I could go, too. no , but wish i was going with you
Marge, If memory serves, the Mariott is a few blocks from the archives; I'm sure there are others in the vicinity, but I do not remember how close or how cheap. Also: be sure to visit the beautiful, brand new downtown library. There is a whole floor of family history/research matierials; I bet it will be worth a bit of your time! Hi and Happy New Year, I will be vising the State library in Nashville in April. Does anyone on the list have suggestions for hotels that are reasonably priced and within easy walking distance (a mile or less)? If anyone has tips or suggestions that will help with my reasearch while I am there I would appreciate that too. I will be reasearching ancestors from Warren and Wilson counties prior to 1850. Sorry I can't help you, but I wanted to let you know you are not alone! I am having the same problem in Putnam Co. I know Ett/Ethan Martin died about 1900, most his family are in Cookeville City Cemetery, but he is not to be found anywhere! I have called the cemetery, and I was told by them that if he didn't have a stone, they would have no record of him. I really hope this is not true. If so, how do they know where not to dig graves now. I would hate for them to accidently dig up my gg-grandfather one day. Ladye Jane, I was the one that was looking for information on my grandfather, Joseph Egleston Smith's niece Bessie. Bessie & Fred raised Bessie's half brother but never had children of their own. The latest pictures I have of Bessie was in the 1940s when my grandfather went back to McMinnville for a visit with the whole family. I appreciate the site, thank you. Will someone please assist and lookup Hugh Shaw in the earliest census. I am trying to follow Hugh Shaw backward from Vincennes, Knox Co, IN. in 1820. In 1823 he and wife Catherine and 3 children are in Texas. There was a Hugh Shaw which served in the Militia IN. He might be located on an early taxlist. Thank you, Mary G.
