Is it possible to also do a look up for a "Robert GORDON" and his wife "Sarah GORDON"? Robert died in 1854 and Sarah died in the 1870s or 1880s, but I would like to find where in Warren Co. they are burried. Possibly near the "old Gordon farm," which was located on the Barron Fork of Collins River. I believe they may be burried near other related Gordons. Thanks for any help. Tei A. Gordon
Your Gordon's are not in my cemetary book. I only have the Volume 4 so I can not help you. Sorry. Christy
You are welcome for the information. I enjoy helping others with their brick walls. I know how it is when you hit one. The cemetary listing shows: Oak Grove Cemetary at Barren Fork. I hope this helps you and if there is anything else I can help you with I can try to find it in the one cemetary book I have. Christy
Hi Everyone: The old genealogy scam is back. www.genseekers.com Behind the password protection are links to the free genealogy on-line. There is no content of their own. In order to get the "5-day free trial" you have to surrender a credit card or bank account number. You have to cancel within 5 days or you get dinged. Guess what? The cancellation e-mail bounces. Does this surprise you? One person who recently fell for the come-on had his/her account dinged not once, but twice. It is time to remind folks on your state and county mailing lists about these scoundrels. It has been a couple of years since we have mentioned this. Permission is granted to pass this on. / ,, \ (^--^)
Christy, in looking at this reply YOU HAVE JUST MADE MY DAY with the maiden name of Abigail! I am really trying to find out all I can about this family. May I ask is it Oak Grove Cemetery or Barren Fork Cemetery?? or perhaps Oak Grove Cemetery at Barren Fork? Thanks for your help. I wonder if someone could look up the Bates' buried in the Whitlock Cemetery in Centertown, TN. I am particularly interested in Abigail Bates, Benjamin Bates, their daughter Mariah Elizabeth Bates Phillips, and son Broomfield Ridley Bates. Thank you so much for your help. Was so sad to see that our cousin has died. She was a remarkable woman.I am so glad I got to meet her that time. She will be missed. Thanks for posting her obituary, Fred Liz
I was going through some very old newspapers I have and saw this and thought others might be interested in some old copy. I find it fun reading them especially the various advertisments. Enjoy Patti The Daily Graphic, New York March 17, 1876 Pigmies of a Past Period [From the Woodbury (Tenn.) Press] An Ancient graveyard of vast proportions has been found in Coffee County. It is similar to those found in White County and other places in Middle Tennessee, but is vastly more extensive, and shows that a race of pigmies who once inhabited this country were very numerous. The same peculiarities of position observed in the White County graves are found in these. The writer of the letter say: Some considerable excitement and curiosity took place a few days ago since near Hillsboro, Coffee County on James Browns farm. A man was ploughing in a field which has been cultivated many years and ploughed up a mans skull and other bones. After making further examination they found that there was about six acres in the graveyard. They were buried in a sitting or standing position. The bones show that they were a dwarf tribe of people about three feet high. It is estimated that there were about 75,000 to 100,000 buried there. This shows that this country was inhabited hundreds of years ago.
Fred, Thank you so much for posting Lib's obituary. I'm so sorry to learn of her death. Last May she was such a gracious host and guide to me. She took me to all the old Anderson and Smoot sites in Warren County and helped me find Joseph Melton's grave. She gave so much to family history. She was a wonderful cousin. Since he died in 1924 there should be a death certificate and maybe even a newspaper obit for him. Have you checked into that? I collect what others have sent me, document when possible, but go more in depth for my own lines [of course]. Thanks for any info. Gant, Thank you for the information. I have done some research on Thomas Johnson & Mahala Martin, but I have never been able to tie them to my line of Johnson. If memory serves me correctly (and that is always dangerous) I believe he was b. KY and was a minister. The Thomas Johnson you show (1847-1924) as being the husband of Julia Ann Denison, I believe to be incorrect. Julia Ann Denison did marry a Thomas Johnson, but it was Thomas Logan Johnson, b. 20 Nov 1833 in either Warren or Marion Co. TN. Thomas Logan was the son of William Perry Johnson, b. 1808, prob. Warren Co. TN. These records are found in the Rev. John J. Watts records, Vol. 6, Pg. 14 in Missouri. Believe me, I know that Johnson is difficult, at best to track. When I try to search any kind of records, they are everywhere. I would be interested in your thoughts on this marriage of Thomas & Julia. Thank you for responding, I have seen your posts before online. Sincerely, Judy in TX
