About when was the couple married? You haven't given us any kind of a time frame that you're searching. Union county marriages actually "start" about 14 or 15 years after the county began, due, I suspect to the Civil War battles fought repeatedly in the area. (Courthouse probably got caught in between on at least one of the battles, but the marriage records don't start until about 1864. Additionally, prior to 1850, you have to check surrounding counties to see if the couple was married in one of them, which would have been their "home" county at the time. It is also possible that sometimes it was easier to get the license from a neighboring county seat if it was closer to their home, or fewer mountainous roads between their home and the Union county seat...so check the surrounding counties as well. Was the couple married in 1900? That census year the census taker not only asked month and year of birth instead of just age, but also asked how many years the couple had been married. I have found it extremely valuable to look in every census a person would have appeared in, whether I learn anything or not about the individual. One census year named a set of twins that "died young" according to my great Uncle, who did not know their names or birth info, and the Footprints book mentions them but gives neither names nor dates. But they were in the 1870 census!! (not in 1860, as they hadn't arrived yet--age 4 in 1870--and not in 1880 because they apparently were dead by then.) Sometimes the census lists other relatives in the household giving clues to previous generations (after all, in those early days, there were no retirement homes for the Senior citizens, and if they couldn't live on their own any more, they had to be with family somewhere. If it was a married daughter or granddaughter's family, it may open up a whole new line of research. Karen, I am so sorry that I didn’t mention the dates. Nancy Catherine was born in 1798 and her father was John James. I have the family data from Nancy and David Morton down, but have never been able to find David’s parents, and all census states that Nancy Catherine was born in TN, so John James was here by that time. John married Delilah Warwick long after Nancy’s birth, so she would have been his second wife. We do not know for sure where John James was born - some say NC as was David Morton, and some say SC. At any rate, this was just a shot in the dark, and I appreciate your questions. I’ve been doing this or so long that I forget people need appropriate data. Ha. While he was probably long gone in 1880, maybe some of his children were still living (check for possible children in a will/probate record). The 1880 census does list the birth place of each person's father & mother. That can be valuable for clues, although isn't always 100% accurate. While you're looking at wills/probate records, check the surname of people in other wills. I have been able to extend lines a generation or two using those records. Also, sometimes land records are useful for the same purpose, although neither record format is a "quickie" answer, as you have to look at all the known surnames to get the right clues. (One of the reasons I usually use the LDS Family History Centers for working wills & land records if visiting the actual counties are too far away to access easily.) Happy hunting.
