I thought I would pass this along. The tales of this virus are making their rounds and I thought I'd put in my 10 cents worth. There is a virus that is attaching itself to e-mails without the sender knowing it. It works through an ISP's x-mailer system like AOL Moxilla. To make a long story short the person who sends it to you has no idea that he sent it. This is a problem because you may get it as an attachment from someone you know. Watch for any e-mail with an attached file labeled happy99.exe. When you download the file and run it you will see a fireworks display. This not a true virus it is a worm program so most antivirus software will not detect it without being updated. If you would care to read more about the virus go to your antivirus homepage and check their updates. Or check Symantec's virus page at: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/happy99.worm.html or http://beta.nai.com/public/datafiles/valerts/vinfo/w32ska.htm azel@sprint.ca suggested that I send this information through the list. I usually don't spread rumors and such about virus sightings. But two things changed my mind on this one. First it is for real, several of the antivirus pages are reporting on it. I have had friends tell me that they have received the attachment. And second is the nature in which it is spread. The person who sends you an e-mail has no idea that there is an attachment. So you may see an attachment in an e-mail from someone you trust and open it. But on the other hand it really doesn't seem to be a violent virus. It's general purpose seems to be just to spread. And it seems to be an easy one to get rid of. Most antivirus sites give a list of files to delete to get rid of it even after your system is infected. So the bottom line is, don't download anything from anyone titled happy99.exe. Just delete it and inform the sender that it was attached to their mail so that they may take steps to rid themselves of it. KEEP IN MIND Simply receiving the file will not cause the virus. Reading the e-mail will not cause the virus to infect your computer. The only way to get the virus on your system is to download happy99.exe and run it as a program. The one exception to this is some versions of Eudora mail that has auto file run. Chip Union County TnGenWeb
