    3. If someone wasn't home they got information from neighbor, or who ever was around. Some of the people couldn't read or write, so, they couldn't spell the names. The census takers put down what they thought they heard. Some people did lie about their age. sometimes they went by middle names or nicknames. My great-grandfather is listed on the 1860 census as Enoch, on the 1870 census as John, and on the 1880 census as J E D. (John Enoch Dawson Taylor).
