The green beans were threaded on a long piece of thread and hung up to dry, or in some cases laid out on a cloth to dry. They became so dry they actually rattled when moved. In order to cook them, they had to be soaked in water overnight, but believe it or not they were tasty, with cornbread and a big slice of onion.
