    1. Who are we looking for? and CONTEST
    2. I<< Maybe it is time for a notice of names being researched again -- >> Margie reminded me that it's been a while since we did this. I took a look at our mailing list and since the last time I looked we have gained almost 50 new people. I wonder why the big jump? Anyway as most of you members who have been around know, a list can have a couple hundred members but ususally it boils down to about 20 or so that join in the conversations. (If the conversations don't pick up I may have to start talking about Moon Pies again...this time the yellow ones) That's OK I'm a member of numerous lists and really there's only one or two I really watch. I think thats what people do here also. So lets all take a minute to remind each other who we're looking for in history. Maybe some of these new people are looking for the same names. Also lets include a few names from other states you're having trouble tracking down. I know most of us research in numerous state, maybe we know of a good resource in another state that can help. And for all you new people if you want to know more about me stop by: http://members.aol.com/thagamizer/ No picture there but you can learn a lot about me. And even have some fun. Oh yeah the other day someone asked me what a Thagamizer is...Anybody got a guess? If so send your guess to me in private e-mail at: thagamizer@aol.com Don't send your answer through the list in case others want to have a guess. This weekend I'll let you know the answer and who (if anybody) got it right. And no your not going to win anything other than the admiration of those who have no idea what a Thagamizer is. 1. Chip's info on Union County Webpage
    2. Congratulations to CHIP for keeping us really active and aware of what is happening on "our" Union County Page -- CHIP is gracious for allowing us to claim it as "our" page ..... yet, we all know that without his dedication and perseverance, no page would exist. Thru this page, I have found much information about my Union County ancestors -- and I have lots of new cousins! I am most grateful to both our Webmaster Chip and to the Union County Historical Society for making research easier for those of us not living close to Union County. Maybe it is time for a notice of names being researched again -- HAMILTON, Alexander m. Cassander LAY, son Francis HAMILTON, granddaughter - Lucy Jane HAMILTON (1861-1935) -- NOTE: Hamilton clan has annual family reunion near Knoxville, September. LAY, Thomas, Jr. --- William LAY, John LAY, Nancy LAY (1840-1916) -- NOTE: LAY Family Genea Asoc has a webpage on LAY lines. Thanks again, Chip, and all those submitting info and/or queries. Raccoon Miller: Still another article about the most sought after man in Union County Genealogy. (We get more requests anyway) Roy Claxton Acuff: The history of this Union County native and Grand Ole Opry star. Also I talked to Mr. Tharpe about Pathway Articles. He is in the process of putting together an index of all Pathway Articles. They like about three years. Once done the index will be made available on our site. It will be searchable. This means you will be able to search all back issues of Pathways for articles that pertain to your research. Once you find the article you will be able to order just that article from The Historical Society. That should reduce the cost to you and allow you to find just the articles you want ONLINE! I'm typing as fast as I can. Thanks for your patience, Chip Union County TngenWeb

    1. New Union County Stuff
    2. Below you will find a list of all the files that have been added to the Union County Page this week. All of these should be linked to our Union County TnGenWeb Page by the time you get this. Be sure to read "A Double Murder" and the "Murder of a Union County Sheriff". I have to stop back by and return some original documents to the Historical Society. I hope to make a proposal to them. Nobody has ever produced an index to the Pathways Quartely Journal. I am going to offer to do that if I can place it online. Then I hope to further convince them to sell articles from these Journals (to cover shipping). What I hope happens is that we will be able to search all back issues online and then order articles from the Museum by number. As is now they will sell past issues through the mail but how are we supposed to know what's in each Journal? http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/lick.htm History of the Lickskillet Community http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/lead.htm History of Leadmine Bend http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/f.htm Island F. and Crooked Creek http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/mohlar.htm Mohlar Family in East http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/butcher.htm Butcher Cemetery Compilation http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/hor.htm Horace Maynard http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/hor3.htm Horace Maynard High is Dedicated http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/hor4.htm The Honored Dead: Horace Maynard Sleeps http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/lloyd.htm Lloyd Branson A Union County Artist http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/lb1.htm The Murder of Sheriff Hutcheson http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/snod1.htm A Double Murder in Union County http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/tay.htm A Highway Marker is Erected (J. 1. Union County Stuff (Historical Society)
    2. The following articles have been added to the Union County Historical Society section of our Union County TnGenWeb Page. Once again all of these links will be available on the main page as soon as all articles are coded. But if you want a look before their added try the URLs below. We have several articles yet to code and we're going as fast as we can. These articles cover the life and times of Horace Maynard. Some say there would have been no Union County without this man. I'm not sure if the world should thank him or not... Anyway he was a colorful character in American politics. The last article below is about Lloyd Branson, a Union County artist of some note. History and life of Horace Maynard. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/hor.htm The Honored Dead Horace Maynard Sleeps http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/hor3.htm Dedication of Horace Maynard School in Maynardville http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/hor4.htm Enoch Lloyd Branson a Union County Artist http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/lloyd.htm Well that's all for now. I'll get back to typing and get some of the others done. Have a great day, Chip P.S. Want a sneak peek at whats coming? Next will be "The Snodderly Murders" an account of the murders as it was reported in local papers. We already have an article about the Snodderly Murders on the page, but it's interesting to read the newspaper accounts. We find just how well the Snodderly family was thought of and how much anger was directed at the killers. Also we will have The Murder of a Union County Sheriff. News accounts of the murder and the man hunt that followed.

    3. To all fellow researchers, Does anyone have access to any of the following censuses in Union Co.: 1850,1860,1880. Does anyone have access to the Claiborne Co. census in 1850-18+, or Lawrence Co.1830 census I am looking for a William Monday(Munday)b: abt.1839, who married a Mildred Graves b:abt.1840, in 1853 in Claiborne Co. (I have the marriage bond)they had 4 children. The last known census I have on them is in 1870 in Union Co. With all 4 chidren still living with them. I found in the 1830 Lawrence Co. census that there is a William Monday as head of household. I checked all of the other Co. census that was on the Union Co.TnGenWeb page and found nothing. So I think this is my best bet. I know this is asking for a lot I just want to known if there is something in either one of these census, before I go and start ordering microfilms. If someone could help me, I would greatly appreciate it or if someone can offer better suggestions. Thank you for your time. Al

    1. New Union County Stuff (Historical Society)
    2. The Historical Society has given us another bag of stuff for the page. We are in the process of coding it all but it may take us a week or so for this batch. Available right now (Tuesday) is Butcher Cemetery and a complete History of the Mohlar Families in East Tennessee. There are numerous spellings of this family name from Mohlar to Miller. It's a huge article so have a cup of coffee while you read it (maybe a Moon Pie?). It spans a couple hundred years and has photos from Germany to Union County. Butcher Cemetery is probably the second oldest in Union County. Chances are you have relatives there. Both of these articles are currently located at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/historical/society.htm They will of course be linked to the main Union County Page but I thought I'd wait and do the whole batch at once. As we get more coded we will let you know. Thanks to all of you who have e-mailed the Union County Historical Society. They report numerous requests for information as well as people joining and ordering books. Have a nice day, Chip Union County Tngenweb

    3. Morning Chip, I can't help with the problem, but I'm chuckling.
