    3. I have come aross the name "Nila" in several Union County families (including mine). Does anyone know if this is a nickname for something else? In the 1900 Union County census, the wife of James B. Welch was named "Nila", they had been married for 3 years. In the marriage records, J. B. Welch married H.M.W. Rouse in 1897. Could "Nila" be H. M. W. Rouse? I would love to see any ideas. Thanks, Terry Clift Maryville, TN

    3. To all felloe researchers, I recieved from a coworkerthat the home office where I work at sent a newsletter out stating: Someone is sendinf out a very desirable screen-saver, the Budweiser Frogs. If you download it, you will lose everything!!! Your hard drive will crash and someone from the Internet will get your screen name and password! DO NOT DOWN LOAD THIS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!! It just went into circulation yesterday, as far as we know. Please distribute this message. This is a new, very malicious virus and not many people know about it. This information was announced yesterday morning (5-5-99)from the Internet. Once again, pass this along to EVERYONE in your address book so that this may be stopped. AOL has said that this is a very dangerous virus and that there is NO remedy for it at this time. Please practice cautionary measures and forward this to all your on-line friends. Now I don't know if this is true or not but I thought that I might share it with everyone. It's better to be safe than soory. Al

I would greatly appreciate it if someone who has access to the unabridged 1880 Union Co census would look up: Timothy Weaver (age 66) on Page 233 and let me know the states in which Timothy's parents were born. The transcription that I have by the Sistlers does not show this information. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Ron

    1. Stolen Tombstones (answer)
    2. An answer has been received regarding our letter writing to E-Bay in protest of them allowing stolen grave markers to be sold on their site. Thought I'd pass it along for all of you to read. -Chip Union County TnGenWeb FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 4, 1999 eBay has recently been contacted by citizens who have expressed concern over the fact that several historical tombstones have appeared for sale on the eBay site. We share your concern, and will not permit these items to be sold on our site. This release is intended to answer several questions that have been raised in connection with these items. First, eBay does not sell or possess the items on its site. eBay is a venue where users post items for sale, and sellers complete transactions directly with buyers. eBay does not, and has never, possessed any historical tombstone. Second, as an Internet Service Provider, eBay cannot and does not pre-screen items posted on its site. While eBay rules strictly prohibit the posting of illicit items such as tombstones, it cannot guarantee that all its users will abide by these rules in posting items for sale. When eBay learns that an illicit item is on its site, it promptly removes the item. However, with approximately 2 million items for sale at any given time, and with over 250,000 new items placed on the site each day, some illicit items may go unnoticed for several days. We depend on our community to work with us in locating and identifying illicit items so that we can quickly remove them. In this case, eBay has promptly removed every tombstone brought to its attention, informed the sellers that such markers are not allowed on the site, and refunded all fees in connection with these auctions to ensure that eBay has in no way received money for this activity. To discourage future listings of tombstones on the site, eBay will also be posting rules on its site shortly regarding the sale of artifacts which will specifically inform users that the sale of historical tombstones is illegal in many states and is prohibited on eBay. eBay has received information that at least some of the items brought to our attention are not tombstones, but historical grave markers given to families of Civil War veterans. In many cases, these grave markers were never actually used as grave markers, but kept by families as mementos. In those instances, the markers are not stolen property, and if they were never used as for tombstones their sale may be lawful. eBay is investigating whether these items can be lawfully sold, and will post information on the site when it makes a final decision. eBay will be contacting law enforcement and encouraging authorities to investigate whether historical marker posted on its site was stolen. eBay will cooperate fully in any investigation of illegal activity, and will provide records to law enforcement on the sellers of any illegal item. eBay appreciates the efforts of those who have contacted us concerning these postings. Concerned law enforcement authorities or interested citizens may contact Associate General Counsel Rob Chesnut at (408) 558-5948 if they have further questions on this matter.

    1. Re: Jesse & Mary Lewis
    2. Thanks for the e-mail. I already knew about John and Jesse Lewis being hanged for the murder of the sheriff and deputy sheriff of Campbell Co. The write-up was very descriptive. I had also read an accounting of this event from letter to Mrs. Bessie Warwick Silver of Heiskell, TN. This letter was written by a G.L. Ridenour of Caryville, TN in 1963. The facts are the same. 2. Chip, just heard from my cousin who lives in Beggs, OK and they are fine, but they haven't been able to connect with other friends/family who live in the affected area. Also, another friend escaped the fury of those storms. Thanks so much for your concern, Chip, and prayers for all the victims and families are much needed. Peace from Pittsburgh, Nina MORTON T.
