    1. New Union Stuff (Historical)
    2. Added some more stuff to our pages. One thing that might interest some of you is the Pleasant Gardens Cemetery list. This cemetery is in Missouri but as most of you know several people from Union County went to Missouri in the 1800's. Several of them are buried here. Pictures have been added to the Luttrell Marble Quarry article, with more to come. The Murder of Wash Smith. When I was given this article Mr. Tharpe made the comment "I hope all those people don't think our county is full of crooks." Well it probably is but most of them have been elected to office and are harmless. But really this is a great article. Murder, revenge, hangings everything it takes to keep your interest. Plus the article mentions several Union Countians that I have heard mentioned by some of you. The Martin Rice biography has been updated also. Have a great day, Chip Union County TnGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion

They had a son named Hugh or HU. William left before birth and went to Missouri starting a new life. Cynthia's first husband was killed in the civil war. They had one daughter Susanna Bright Bridges. Susanna is burried in the Lost Creek Cemetery, Union co. TN. Does any one know anymore? Hugh Stanley is my great grand father

    1. Strevel
    2. Raholt
    3. I'm going to post this message to the list again, because I was somewhat in error in the name that I was searching for before. I am looking for a Strevel that married a Bowen somewhere between the late 1860's and early to mid 1870's. I originally thought her name to be Sarah, but I now know her given name was Serena but it also appears as Serery as well. Sarah also shows up on some documention that I have about the death of her mother Lydia Lane Strevel. Her father William Strevel died in the civil war in 1862. Now, William and Lydia show up on the census indexes posted on the Union County website I also know that they must have lived on the Union Claiborne county line because they also show up in the 1850- 1860 Claiborne County census. However there is no record, in Claiborne county for anyone named Bowen or any of the misspellings that the name often has. So actually that compounds the problem of finding who she married because the name could be misspelled in any number of ways. Therefore hunting for Strevel appears to be my best bet in finding any record of a marriage between the two. If anyone has any information about a marriage between a Strevel and anything that even remotely is liking Bowen, including Bowers, Bowens, Bowing etc, please let me know. Thanks. Richard Holt

I have been trying to find any family with that name around Anderson, Campbell, Union, Know, Claiborne Co and have not been successful. She died between 1900-1910 in Know Co. I have found many Nation (s) from NC. My family stories have indicated that she was Indian. Have you found any Nation (s) in those counties? Have you found any to be Indian? I would appreciate any leads you might offer me. She was born about 1875 in Tn according to what little I can uncover. Thanks so much for any help darlene carter

    1. Strevel married a Bowen
    2. Raholt
    3. I am desperately trying to track down who Sarah Strevel married. I know his last name was Bowen, but I'm not sure of his first name. I know they were only married for a short time and that he disappeared at some point after their children were born. They had two son's Andrew Jackson Bowen, who was born June 1877 and Doc Bowen. I don't know who was the older of the two sons, but I do know that Doc was still living in Maynardville, Tn, when Andrew died 1953. I know the Strevel family had lived in Union County for decades, with two of them, including Sarah's father dieing in the Civil War. Where the unknown Bowen came from, I have no idea, but until I can find out his full name, I really doubt that I will be able to trace back my Bowen roots any farther than Andrew and his mother. The only records that I have concerning Sarah Stevel Bowen has to do with the settling of her step mother, Lydia Strevel's meger estate. Lydia died in 1909, Union County. If anyone knows anything about Sarah and her husband please let me know. I would appreciate any and all info and want to take this opportunity to thank the many people who helped me out with info on my Butcher and Cox roots earlier in the week. I really appreciate all the informative info you all sent. You were all a great help. Thanks Richard Holt

    1. Lanes in Union County
    2. Hello all. I am looking for information on Lanes in Union County. My grandmother was Lettie Geneva Lane born in Union Co 4 April, 1911 and died 21 July 1947 (before I was born.) She had sisters Ruth, Ruby, Nannie, and Trevena "Tootsie" Lane. Her mother was supposedly Bessie Cardwell, however I understand she was married at least four times, once to a Lynch, so I am not sure whether Cardwell was a maiden name or not. I have no idea who Lettie's father was, other than he was deceased at an early age. I never met any of these people and they or their descendants may still live in or near Union County. Lettie married Carl Lewelling from Knoxville, Tn. Their oldest child was Evelyn Louise Lewelling (my mother). She told me she had never heard anything about her grandfather and, as a child, only remembered her grandmother being a Lynch. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Dusti Sparks

    3. Hi! I went last year and it was absolutely great! I learned so much about how my family lived---not so very long ago. The genealogy and book tables had so many books for sale that I filled up my backpack. If any of you have a chance to attend, it is well worth the time. You can see the museum through the Union County TnGenWeb Page or access it directly at this url: http://thesmokies.com/features/places/norris_tn/index.htm Also if you are in the area take a drive through the town of Norris, just above the Museum. Here is a town where time has stood still. Kids still wald to school on sidewalks, and the community still gets together for social events. It looks like something from Andy Griffith. I am told the only crime there is that tourist come there and stay.
