In a message dated 7/1/99 10:26:51 AM EST, mzwahlen@wildcatblue.com writes: << Are they planning on charging for all postings or just the classified ones? >> At this time it is just the classifieds. And they don't exactly say that they will charge, just that they reserve the right to. Thanks for all of your kind comments about me and "our" pages. Let me go a bit further here. In the past few weeks Rootsweb has been making some waves and noise about what they might and might not do. They have created a page for every county in the United States. The page for Union County links to my page. That's OK and actually I'm glad they gave me a link. But their page is a bunch of message boards. A place for you to submit wills, queries, obits, bible records and so on. Once submitted the stuff you send is archived by Rootsweb. Rootsweb is FOR PROFIT. They can sell the stuff people post with them if they choose. Where as TnGenWeb is registered as NON PROFIT. We are not allowed to charge for anything. If you will notice on pages that you all have submitted and allowed me to put on the web, there is a notice that gives copyright to who sent it in. If at any time somebody gets mad at Chip all they have to do is say "Chip you're an idiot remove my page". Bam it's gone. I do not claim to own anything anyone sends me. I am very particular about this. I feel like Rootsweb is graying the border between Rootsweb and the USGenWeb Project. Rootsweb claims to be the biggest and they are selling product based on that claim. They house most of the USGenWeb, take us away from Rootsweb and what do they have left? Some stuff they have archived that people sent in? Did they explain to these people that they might one day sell their information? How many of these people sent things in knew the difference between Rootsweb and USGenWeb? What will eventually happen to the Union County TnGenWeb? Nothing that anyone will notice. One day I may get really cheesed off and move my site off of Rootsweb. Rootsweb may say "Hey Chip you have us all wrong" and convince me of it. The TnGenWeb may get it's own dedicated server space. Or most likely... I will move it one day to my own server at Maynardville.Com. I will always have a Union County page, or see to it that someone takes it over when I'm too old or nutty to continue. Bottom line, I want Rootsweb to better explain their position while marketing their product. Tell people up front when they submit things to these boards that they are For Profit. And maybe better explain the difference between Rootsweb and us. I'm not saying Rootsweb is doing anything wrong. I just want people to know that there is a difference between Rootsweb and USGenWeb. While I'm on the subject of being nutty, a local paper did an article on me this week. Picture and all! I look like a freak in the picture though. The article was about Maynardville.Com. If you haven't seen it in a while drop by. Check out my idiotic editorials. You may never think of me the same again. Chip Union County TnGenWeb http://www.tngenweb.org/union Maynardville.Com http://www.maynardville.com P.S. Lets see how many of you read this whole letter. Chip, I agree with you 200%. RootsWeb has been very useful to me and I can even understand their needs for funds to run their site. BUT--- It is not right for them to charge any fee what-so-ever for work that is done by others. Isn't this kind of like "stealing?" You have done a fabulous job and it is obvious that you have put many hours in this AND EXPECTING NOTHING IN RETURN. I would like to tell you how much I, and I'm sure many, many others, appreciate your efforts. RootsWeb: If you need funds, this is NOT the way to raise them. Don't STEAL from those who have helped you build your site. I would be willing to bet that if you start charging fees for postings, you will see that people will go elsewhere. Chip: If you decided to move, I will "electronically" follow you anywhere!!!! Kay in GA
Don't get me wrong I have absolutely nothing against Rootsweb or their service. But I do not like what they are doing with these boards. Pages like these are being created without consultation of the county host. I appreciate both my page users and Rootsweb for providing a great service to me and Union County. I have spent the last couple of years building this website, and attracting users. I do have a problem with an organization that wants to use my work to make money. How will they make money from this? If you read the agreement (included below) you will see that the phrase "RootsWeb may charge a nominal fee for new listings" is included. I have a problem with my users being charged anything and it being labeled Union County. I realize that there is nothing I can do about it. But I just wanted to put in my ten cents worth. Everyone wants to make money and I understand the need. But the TnGenWeb is Non-Profit and is registered that way with the state of Tennessee. >From Rootsweb: <<CLASSIFIEDS POLICIES: <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~classifieds/Rules.html> Use of the classifieds boards is currently completely free. In the future RootsWeb may charge a nominal fee for new listings to help cover the costs of operating the message boards.>> If you all think something like this would be useful to our page let me know. I will code one myself and right on top it will say "posting here is free". There will be no maybes about it. Let me know what you all think and if there is enough interest I will create one and place it right on our page. I'm off my soapbox now, Chip Union County TnGenWeb P.S. I don't go off on these tirades very often, please forgive me.
The new Rootsweb For Sale and Want to Buy area is something I plan to monitor closely. You might try posting at <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~classifieds/genbbs.cgi/USA/TN/Union/tobuy> to see if there are any unwanted copies floating around. Once it's off the ground I think this will be a hit. Gail Mynatt Zeigler
I'm just wondering if the Historical Society of Union Co. might take up the cause of trying to get the books in reprint. Perhaps they could have it reprinted themselves with the authors permission. I would love to have a copy and I'm sure there are others who would also. I have lots of family from that area. Laughing so hard I can't see. I will catch you up on what is happening here over this long weekend. << Oh, Florence, girl you are a stitch!!!!!! This e-mail and many like it are very true. Yahoo bought Geocities and now stakes claim to every web page housed there. That's why I always recommended Xoom.Com instead. Both are free services and both have problems, but Xoom doesn't have those blasted popup pages. Actually though when Lycos bought Tripod they stole all of those user pages too. I use free webpages from time to time, but I guess we get what we pay for. Look in the near future for Yahoo to reverse this decision. Yahoo is very reactive to it's image, and will not allow it to be soiled. And trust me it will be. This problem is circulating the net faster than anything I have ever seen. Chip

I received the following request, can any of you help them out? Chip I have seen a copy of a book called "Our Union County Heritage" by Kathleen George Graves and Winnie Palmer McDonald. I spoke to Mrs. McDonald a few years ago and found out that all the volumes of the book are out of print. She said that many people had been urging her to have them reprinted but she didn't feel like she could do it. I called every book store in the area and no one could find a copy. I even called used book stores. Still no luck. I wondered if there might be anyone that knows of a copy someone might be willing to let go. I know some of my family is in it but have not been able to find any volume of it for sale. Thanks for the consideration. P. Russell Mitchell volfan99@gateway.net (volfan99)

Hahahaha Ninja, I just volunteered you for that job...... No I didn't but did tell her I would if no one volunteered, but your idea is better. Later Girl, Florence Nancy, I took some photos for a friend out in Hawaii whose ancestors were buried in Southside Cemetery here in PITT. Honestly, you could barely read them at all, but the photos from my 35mm came out great. There is a genealogy acts of kindness program that you might check out. That URL is http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnraogk. The deal is that someone will take your pictures, but you in turn, must help someone find information in the NJ area. It really works out great and it's a super way to work as a team. Nina MORTON T. >>

I have Chip's ok to post this to the list. I am in far-off New Jersey and I need to hire someone to take a roll of film for me in one of the Claiborne County cemeteries. My g grandparents' stones are wearing badly and I'd like some good, readable photos before they are gone forever. My g grandmother was the only child of a man who died young & she herself died before Tennessee started keeping death records. The names and dates on those stones are the final piece in my proofs that she is who I say she is. Talk about concrete evidence - and it is disappearing fast. You would need a pretty good lens, as I'd like a progression of photos showing the two side by side and then closer & closer until - hopefully - you can read the inscriptions. If there is a professional or a gifted amateur in the area who could take a few hours to do this for me please get in touch privately. Thanx. Nancy
Hi Group, I am looking for information on Richard Green. He married Mary J. Atkins. Their daughter was Elizabeth Green, b. 1869, and married Wm. Thomas "Tom" Maples. If anyone has any information on either of these two families in Union County, I would be very grateful. Thanks, Steve M. e M.=20
