    2. I would go to the Lawson McGhee Library in Knoxville and go through their newspaper archives. Look at the weekly paper from Knoxville, I can't remember it's name. There was the paper that became the Sentinel and then another one. Anyway they have them all on film. So knowing the year you would only have about fifty to go through. Sounds like a lot but really on film it doesn't take that long at all. Chip

    2. Chip, I get the impression that some people think you are saying Rootsweb is considering charging for posting to the boards, lists etc. Correct me if I am wrong but I thought that they were reserving the right to charge people who are selling things like genealogical books and CDs through their new classified section. They have always charged for some things by only offering them to folks who are contributors; things like hosting a surname board, being a listowner, automatic surname notification, and most recently mail mode for ROOTS-L. As for the archiving of old posts -- how is their policy any different from posting to most any other non genealogy list and having that post (while still yours, legally) archived irretrievably and for all time by Deja News or some other net archive? Please educate us further. Gail Mynatt Zeigler

    3. Chip, I agree with Rae-Davis Smith and the others. I have been on one list since it started, I was angry about the notice of information being archived for everyone. The information is now available for anyone to "take". I will never post to the Rootsweb lists again. This was not like TN-UNION, you have the best of all I've been on, the best people. I just checked you out, in the first picture you have nice hair, the rest was not available, your musical ability looks awesome. The cats picture did not come up, which is O.K., my daughter (sons wife) has a cat, being the "good mother-in-law" I took care of that cat once for two weeks. Inside cat, no claws on front paws, but oh mercy those back claws, I grabbed that cat off my table and ooh the pain, then in about a week I got sick, the "doc" said I had cat scratch fever. Not to end yet....cat had her first season. I thought cat was dying when I came home from work. I never knew they had such a strange moan. I have dogs. Thanks for sharing so much with us, Ann P.

    1. Help with Date of Death
    2. I would like to find the precise death date of Jane Loots Glandon, who died in Union County in 1890. Specifically, I am trying to learn who her parents are and I am hoping that, with a month and day of death, an obituary or death notice might be found. Can anyone guide me in the direction of any local records that might help me find her death date with only the year to go on? Thanks in advance. This is such a great list to belong to. Becky

    1. Re: RELATIONSHIP????
    2. First cousin, second cousin, etc. are cousins that are equally distant from the common ancestor, grandchildren, great grandchildren, or great great, etc. The removed comes when they are an odd number of generations from the common ancestor. The number of generations down from the common ancestor that they are equal determines which cousin they are, then the number of generations that the one person is further away from that cousin-ship determines how far "removed" they are. (I know, this is probably as clear as mud.) Joe and Jane are brother and sister. Joe's son Mike & Jane's daughter Michelle are first cousins. Mike's son Sam & Michelle's daughter Sandra are second cousins. Sandra has a daughter Kathy. Kathy is Sam's second cousin once removed. Does that help??? Karen

    2. For what it's worth, I was on a e-mail list that said all subscribers that were not contributors to Rootsweb would have to go digest mode. I don't do digest. I don't do blackmail. All my discretionary $$ are going to a major local genealogy project right now. So I bailed out. I still have plenty of email to read, but don't have as many questions to answer. LIked that Kiddy. :o) ----- Original Message ----- From: Morom01@aol.com To: TNUNION-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, July 01, 1999 12:28 PM Subject: Classified Website (explanation and surprise) In a message dated 7/1/99 10:26:51 AM EST, mzwahlen@wildcatblue.com writes: << Are they planning on charging for all postings or just the classified ones? >> At this time it is just the classifieds. And they don't exactly say that they will charge, just that they reserve the right to. Thanks for all of your kind comments about me and "our" pages. Let me go a bit further here. In the past few weeks Rootsweb has been making some waves and noise about what they might and might not do. They have created a page for every county in the United States. The page for Union County links to my page. That's OK and actually I'm glad they gave me a link. But their page is a bunch of message boards. A place for you to submit wills, queries, obits, bible records and so on. Once submitted the stuff you send is archived by Rootsweb. Rootsweb is FOR PROFIT. They can sell the stuff people post with them if they choose. Where as TnGenWeb is registered as NON PROFIT. We are not allowed to charge for anything. If you will notice on pages that you all have submitted and allowed me to put on the web, there is a notice that gives copyright to who sent it in. If at any time somebody gets mad at Chip all they have to do is say "Chip you're an idiot remove my page". Bam it's gone. I do not claim to own anything anyone sends me. I am very particular about this. I feel like Rootsweb is graying the border between Rootsweb and the USGenWeb Project. Rootsweb claims to be the biggest and they are selling product based on that claim. They house most of the USGenWeb, take us away from Rootsweb and what do they have left? Some stuff they have archived that people sent in? Did they explain to these people that they might one day sell their information? How many of these people sent things in knew the difference between Rootsweb and USGenWeb? What will eventually happen to the Union County TnGenWeb? Nothing that anyone will notice. One day I may get really cheesed off and move my site off of Rootsweb. Rootsweb may say "Hey Chip you have us all wrong" and convince me of it. The TnGenWeb may get it's own dedicated server space. Or most likely... I will move it one day to my own server at Maynardville.Com. I will always have a Union County page, or see to it that someone takes it over when I'm too old or nutty to continue. Bottom line, I want Rootsweb to better explain their position while marketing their product. Tell people up front when they submit things to these boards that they are For Profit. And maybe better explain the difference between Rootsweb and us. I'm not saying Rootsweb is doing anything wrong. I just want people to know that there is a difference between Rootsweb and USGenWeb. While I'm on the subject of being nutty, a local paper did an article on me this week. Picture and all! I look like a freak in the picture though. The article was about Maynardville.Com. If you haven't seen it in a while drop by. Check out my idiotic editorials. You may never think of me the same again. 3. Hi Chip:.. I totally agree with your summation of the free posting.. I also am aware of the future charge Rootsweb is considering as I read it somewhere. Exchanging genealogy information is what genealogy is all about. Fee charging would take the enjoyment out of it. Union County is a great site and I prefer to keep it the way it is. You have done/and continue to do a fabulous job. Sincerely, sandy

    3. Chip, Are they planning on charging for all postings or just the classified ones? I didn't even know there were classified boards. BTW you do a great job and I really appreciate all your hard work. I only wish my home counties web site was as useful as yours. You would be surprised how many people out there want your family info so they can turn around and include it in a book to sell for profit. I haven't been at this genealogy hobby very long and it has already happened to me. As soon as I posted my great grandfathers name on a message board a lady contacted me. Said she had lots of info to share and wanted mine. I shared some of mine. All I got from her in return was VERY limited info I already had. Then she gave me the ole avoid and brush off. There are all kinds out there believe me. Genealogy is a hobby and should be done for fun....not profit. All information should be shared and shared equally by ALL. I can't even begin to thank those kind, true genealogy loving folks who have shared with me.
