    1. Rice Family
    2. Hi all, I was searching for some of my father's family the other day and thought I would visit the USGENWEB Tombstone site for Blount Co., AL. I know we have Rices in Union/Campbell/Knox co., it is not a surname I am researching, but I thought I would pass along the following in case someone else was. The listing for Riceville Cemetery has several Rices listed from Knox Co. TN, some of the names were James Monroe Rice & Sarah Hedrick Rice; Marcus Lafayette Rice (Jake), and other surnames mentioned were: Hawn/Hon/Haun, Compton/Cumpton, Sanders, and Willoughby. If anyone is searching these families check out: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/blount/cemetery/ricetown.txt If I have messed up the address, just go to www.USGENWEB.com, click on the Tombstone Project, then AL, then Blount Co. It should be easy to find. Kim Las Cruces, NM >^..^<

    3. Dear Kay, I am also responding to your request for information regarding Union County. You will fly into Knoxville, TN. Major airlines serve McGhee Tyson Airport. If you are planning to do research you definitely want to visit the East TN Historical Society, also the Union County Historical Society/Museum. Check the hours on both of these as they vary. My high school friend, Ginny Johnson, is the Librarian at the UCHS. She volunteers there on Sundays only. You will find both of these places helpful with research. If you don't mind, could I ask you another question? I was hoping to plan a trip to Union Co. and then on up to Middlesboro, Bell Co., Ky. and Harlan, Harlan Co., KY. this summer. I live in a suburb of Atlanta and would be flying up and renting a car. I haven't checked into this much but it looks like Knoxville would be the closest airport. Is there any airport in Union in which major airlines fly into? If so, do you know which airlines fly there. Atlanta has so many different airlines that come into our city that I could spend all day on phone finding one that flies into Union. Would appreciate any suggestions that you may have. We're very small, maybe not in size. McGhee Tyson airport in Knoxville is by far the closest to us. And really it's not that far from there to Union County. Straight up Alcoa highway onto the interstate and up broadway, and you're here. As far as the other places you are going, stay on the same highway and you'll get to each one. It seems to me that United had an ad on TV the other day about great rates between Atlanta and Knoxville, check with them. Suggestions: Stop at the Historical Society in Maynardville. Stop at Smokey Mountain Market (north of Maynardville) and get a hotdog (best in this part of the country). Then north of there stop at Cumberland Gap. There is a little town there that is like Mayberry. Really a nice place to stop and look around. The community is called Iron Furnace. Then you're off through our huge tunnel into KY. Once in Middlesboro stop and get a lottery ticket. I know you have a lottery in GA, but these people take it very serious. I think it's considered a retirement plan in KY. Then the next wide place in the road north of Middlesboro, is a unique town. It has a mountain with a huge boulder chained to the side of it. Odd I know but it's true. Have a great trip, Chip

Located in Virginia, I am one hour from the Tennessee line. We can discuss the project in greater detail if you are interested in my services. I can be reached at rfgibson@naxs.com or 540-228-0957. 3. Another paper which was in published was the Knoxville Gazette (I think that is correct), it was prior to 1900. I have the ETHS quarterly books, several papers have existed. If I may suggest, well I am going to suggest, Mrs. Candra Phillips, Reference Department, Lawson McGhee Library has searched for obit's. for years. I know some cannot be found in the Knoxville papers. Also think at one time I was told to contact the library in Oak Ridge, I did and they were most helpful. The old City Dir's. have been at McClung as long as I can remember or started this research, and that was 1978 <G>. You can call and ask or send an email. It will not hurt to try. Josh had a brother named Tom who was supposed to be a preacher. My dad also had a brother, George, that was a preacher and was for a time the preacher at Taylor Grove Baptist Church. He was married to a Cynthia Russell I believe. I am having a hard time locating anything on my family. Any help would be appreciated. Maybe a few helpful hints ? Thanks, Steve.

    2. Hi Gail, Your e-mail caught my eye when you mentioned the name Mynatt. My husband's relatives are Wood and Lewis, some in Union Co. but most in Knox Co. When we were in TN about four years ago a newly found Lewis relative, Jack Lewis, took us to the Glenwood Cemetery to see all the Wood Family graves and then we drove out to the Mynatt Cemetery where William Lewis (1823-1891) and his wife, Lydia Landrum Lewis(1821-1872) were buried. This cemetery was founded in 1812. Were you aware of this cemetery? It's just outside Knoxville. Pat from California
