My Grandchildren love them, with a Sprite. I lived in Michigan for years thought I saw them there, well look at your Wally World (Wal-Mart). Dang, I missed out on the roadkill appetizers! 3. Chip/Sue It seems like I remember an article that was done in the Knoxville paper on Cole's store. In the article they talked about a card game that was unique to Cole's store. Apparently they made up the rules for it and used to play quite frequently. I remember passing there on my way up to my Uncle George Pierce's place above Taylor Grove Baptist Church. Do you remember the name of that card game they used to play? 1. POLL
    2. Chip, as usual, the POLL was great fun. My parents did not have the good brains to stay in the Hills of TN, so I grew up in Florida. On our trips to Knoxville every year to visit relatives, I could look forward to RC colas and the one little pastry we did not get in Florida -- those little individual pecan pies, which I dearly loved then and still do today. My mother uses some strange phrase which I've never heard anyone but her EVER say (and about 10 years ago, I accidentally used), "Well, I'll Swannee." Isn't that the strangest phrase you've ever heard? Again, Chip, you are the BEST and this site is now and will be forever, my FAVORITE. Nina Morton T.

    1. need some help
    2. Patricia Graves Reagan
    3. Dear Union County folks, You sure can make a girl home sick. My name is Pat Graves Reagan and I am the daughter of Wylie clondis Graves. My Daddy along with his Brother left union County in 1929 and I do not think they ever returned. Jacob Sylvester Graves was my grandfather and he was born in 1853 and died in 1944. My grandmother was Martha Kitts and she died in 1922. I was born in 1939 and was raised by my aunts on my Mothers side in Knoxville. I am hoping there is some Young High School folks out there , I went in 1954-59. I have not been home in 15 years. I am a scrapbooker, and rubber stamper nut and I am trying to put a memory book together. Now I have three pictures. I have death certificates, marriage records and stuff like that but it needs something else. Dugh? No I am not writing a book do not plan to publish anything but I would like to add a little more than what I have. I think that it is safe to say that I can prove that all of my people came before Tenn. Became a state so I go way back and my roots are deep. Strange because I have been in Wisconsin for 35 years but I still talk, think and write like my family before me. I know I am asking a lot but I would like some old pictures, Maynard High School class of 1929. I am related to Johnns Graff Graves and I would love to have a real picture, Boston and Sarah Effland threw Danial and Sopia Clapp, Barbara Graves and Henry Sharp threw John Graves and Sarah sharp. Then spreading my wings a bit I go all the way back to the Old Peter Kitts and Sarah Wyricks and the link here is John Kitts and Barbara Monroe, bringing in the Severs and Keck. Then the early Thomas Hall of Halls Crossroads and Frakers, Gilliams. I love the old stories and the history of the people and if I could say anything to this group it would be to share more of those old stories that have been passed down for generations. I know my family traveled with them and it will help all of us that were for some reason or another were not able to hear them and know them. When going threw the old books , newspaper, genealogies, and things that I will never be able to see my self if you would just copy it and send it I would gladly pay any body for there trouble. I would especially like to have a picture of my daddy 1912-29. My grandmother Martha Kitts Graves, Margaret Kitts Monroe (married william Kitts first do not know who he was becouse he left town ) but she later married George Monroe and died in 1910. I would be most greatful. I can take a scanned picture or by snale mail. With deepest reguards Pat Graves Reagan 214 Adams St. Neenah, WI. 54956

Cole's store was in the Sentinel when it closed. It was also featured on the Heartland Series now featured on the Travel Channel as Appalachian Stories. Try to watch Appalachian Stories if you can get the Travel Channel, 90% of it is Union County. But the card game started out years and years ago. Two old men started playing a game with some sort of wager. Neither knew how to play the game. Neither would admit their ignorance and each started making up rules. Well, the other had no idea either so he went along with the other one's rules and vice-versa. Before long their perpetual card game turned into a game of it's own. Get me started and I'll tell you about a revenuer who stopped by there one day...So I'm told. Chip Union County TnGenWeb

It looked same on outside and only minoe changes inside,no grapette though. We took pictures of the outside .Loved that store. Sue

    2. Sarahjames is a little old lady who didn't know there had been a Civil War until she married and moved from the Hills of East Tennessee. She will never forget going to a Doctor who ask her if she went bare footed and had chickens in the yard. She also had to change the way she pronounced a lot of words like aggs instead of eggs, arn instead of iron and etc. My husband still shavels instead of shovels even after a degree from UT. I had a lot to overcome even without the RC and Moonpies but I am telling you East Tennessee is the most beautiful Country in the South and I have always been proud to say I was from the Hills of East Tennessee.
