Hey Nina, my mom used to say "Well, I swan" all the time. In fact I've said it a few times myself. <G> Steve > pecan pies, which I dearly loved then and still do today. My mother uses > some strange phrase which I've never heard anyone but her EVER say (and about > 10 years ago, I accidentally used), "Well, I'll Swannee." Isn't that the > strangest phrase you've ever heard
My mother sometimes said "Swanee" but more often said, "I swan". I knew that it was short for Swanee. Trouble was, I never really knew what it meant. I realized what the intent was but had no clue where it came from. P. I heard the story of the lights from one of my relatives...I thought he was seeing things...I'm happy to know that he wasn't drunk or crazy...He swore that he watched the lights from his house and never found out what they were ... Rest assured, without any doubt, the cat sat on the mouse. He sends about as many e-mails as I do. Chip

I have watched this long enough... I have to put in my 2 cents worth...We have moon pies here in Atlanta and my favorite way to eat them is to put them in the microwave and heat them up just enough to make them gooey and then eat them with a fork...I have one every day on my break at work... I don't know where it originated, but "cool beans" has been floating around the midwest for several years now. Karen

My mom used to say "I swan to goodness" all the time. I thought perhaps "swan" meant "swear unto" as in "I swear unto goodness your room is a mess." Never heard her say "Swanee," however. But I am so, so thrilled to hear about something similar. I wondered for years if I'd just imagined her saying that, not having heard anything like it ... until now. Jim
Chip, Driving a truck all over the US and Canada, I have come across a number of imitations. They look like a Moon Pie but don't taste like one. One even had the taste of coconut. Nothing like the real thing! I was raised in Chattanooga, guess that is where I got the taste for them. Flo in Texas
Since everyone is reminiscing, I would like to ask if anyone remembers Paul Rosenbalm having a restaurant in Manardville?? One was on the corner where the new bank is now and the other across the street from the courthouse. Every year they had a birthday dinner for my Grandfather(Jim Rosenbalm)and Paul Rosenbalm which was the highlight of out year, since we met cousins we hadn't seen since the year before and met new ones born between. My Dad was raised in Union Co (Black Fox area)I now live in neighboring Anderson Co but have many cousins still living in Union Co. I still eat Moon Pies and say I swannee , which my grandkids get a kick out of. I think that saying came from the fact that a Lady wasn't supposed to swear, so it was shortened. Lets never forget our past. Florence Rosenbalm Hoffman
I hear the expression "Cool Beans" often at work.
