    1. Re: Mail List Problems?
    2. Chip, I have been on this list for a couple of months and although I have not had any luck with finding my lost relatives, Cary's and Cox's,and have not contributed any comments prior to this, I will now. The KY lady? who chose to unsubscribe in such an unfriendly manner got my ire up. I stay on this list simply because I enjoy the chit chat. Moon Pies and RC Cola is part of my past although, and I am not from Union Co. Lots of us have this in common and I like a little light reflection occasionally. Keep up the good work. All you Union Co. natives, you're doing a great job on this list. Barbara C.

    3. I am mad, but then again I feel sorry for this person...I wonder if she has any friends off line! I rather doubt it...Keep up the good work Chip, this is the only list that I really enjoy..I haven't found any family on here, but I don't care, I have fun here and I consider you a friend and will never leave this list...Thank you so much for NOT being like the other lists...I love genealogy, but sometimes you just want to talk with your friends about other things...Thank you again.. 1. Re: Moon Pie (and Grapette) Locator
    2. All this junk food nostalgia prompted me to look to see if Grapette was still around. I never was a Moon Pie fan but I LOVED Grapette. All I found were sites like Pop, The Soda Shop that claimed to have the real thing but everything they have seems to come in long neck 12 oz. plastic bottles so I have my doubts. No self respecting purple, super sweet grape drink could possibly come in anything but those tiny little glass bottles. Will the real Grapette please stand up? Is it still being made? Any of "you'ens" know? OOPS, I swan, there's another one. 1. Free genealogy class Oct 16
    2. (Just in case some of the list members might be within driving range of Omaha, NE, I am sending this announcement to you--feel free to share it with others.) Evelyn Orr will be teaching the class Oct 16 on the Melungeons. 9:00 AM in rooms 2 & 3 at the W. Dale Clark Library. Admission is free, but pre-registration is required. (Call the Hx/Soc Sc desk at the W. Dale Clark Library, or e-mail me OmahaMom@aol.com) For those of you who do not know who the Melungeons are: they are a "mystery" ethnic group that originated in the South, but have spread out in succeeding years. They are believed to be tri-racial by many, although many don't agree on who made up the three races. The group tended to be somewhat clannish, not intermingling with society in general. Initial locations were from NC, VA, TN, WV, & KY, although descendants have spread out since colonial times. Because there is some indication that some eastern N.A. tribes are possibly involved, Evelyn has told us she will touch on researching Native Americans during the class. Two of the surnames typically found among the Melungeons are Mullens/Mullins & Atkins/Adkins. There are others. If you have early Southern families that seem to disappear into a black hole, maybe they were Melungeons. Hope to see some of you there. Karen PS: At the present time, we're not videotaping, or audio taping these classes because some of the instructors hesitate to lose the control of their material (and it is theirs even though they choose to share it in a class). It may be a possibility in the future--but not yet. Too many logistics to work out at the present time.

    1. Re: Mail List Problems?
    2. Dear Chip. boy are you going to get some responses to this one!! First of all let me say that even if I didn't have a speck of Morton or Meltabarger or any other Union County DNA, I would BEG to be on this list. Rootsweb or not. I belong also to another list where anything other than BORRRRRING lineage lines are forbidden. The only reason I stay on that list is to stir up their blue blooded stiffiness once in a while. What attracted me to Genealogy in the first place were the PEOPLE, not the names , not the possibility of finding out that once of my Ancestors came over on the Mayflower or whatever.. but the PEOPLE.. what did they think, what did they do?? Why did they leave England or Prussia or whatever to follow whatever dreams they had..I'm not putting this very well, but what I have found is that their history is interesting to me, not as collection of names but as a collection of people. (Dirt farmers every one! Not a blue blood in the group thank God.) Your list is LIVING genealogy! I love it here. It's like going home and sitting around with all the folks yakking over coffee and R-uh See. Let that poor unfortunate woman go. And I hope the screen door don't hit her where the good lord done split her. Love to all of y'all. Cynde

    1. Mail List Problems?
    2. Hi folks, A lady who hadn't been a member of our list very long had a little problem with our recent conversations. I've included her e-mail to me below. Out of being a gentleman, I have deleted her name and e-mail address. She decided not to be a member of our list anymore. Instead of just unsubscribing, she felt the need to e-mail me personally, and give me her opinion. That's fine, I understand her ideas. Although I hope that I am not ever so busy that I don't have time to talk about other things. What cheesed me off was that this lady, after sending me this e-mail decided it necessary to report me and my list to the TnGenWeb. No I don't get in trouble, it's my list and I can pretty much do what I want. The lady that takes complaints at TnGenWeb is a personal friend of mine and forwarded this ladies e-mail to me. Trust me the one she sent to the TnGenWeb was nowhere near as nice as the one she sent to me. I have therefore not included that one in this letter. My point is simply this. For months we go and talk about just genealogy. For months we go and only have one or two e-mails a week. Every now and then, we get off track and talk about Cole's Store or Moon Pies. Well personally I think an old time meeting place in our county is genealogy related. Personally I think Moon Pies are a social icon of the southern area in which Union County rests. Therefore it is my opinion that these are relevent facts. If anyone wants to unsubscribe, then feel free to do so. If any of you have a problem with me let me know. I can think of no position that I have on any issue that is not flexible. This lady was entitled to her opinions. But to blatently go behind someone's back to report them and the member's of their list is wrong, and blatent cowardace. That is my opinion and nobody elses. It is things like this that truly make me want to give up and devote all my time to Maynardville.Com. So why am I writing this to you all? To make this statement. The mail list is what it is and nothing else. If you go to our poll and look, you will see an overwhelming success rate at people finding family members through our list. If we stray off topic sometime, so be it. I don't think this list is going to fill anyone's mailbox. I am not sour on the world yet as some people seem to be. Disgruntled Chip Union County TnGenWeb P.S. I have another list ready if I should ever have the need or obligation to move off of Rootsweb. If someone complains, and the establishment should ever side with them (not likely) I would be most glad to accept any of you as members on my other list. 3. Hi Ann, I have seen the "Duncan Road" lights also. The story I heard was that a poor woman was caught stealing a loaf of bread and hung for the crime. The light is supposed to be her ghost traveling to the tree where she was hung. There is a new sub-division that was built across the road from the tree where the light stops. I would also be interested in knowing the legend behind the lights. 2. j.d.white
    3. My best guess is that Po-mack was around 68or 69. It was packaged in a sophisticated little bottle that reminds one of a wine cooler bottle of today. like I said, I have asked several so-called collectors of memorabilia if they had ever seen or heard of this bottle; they all said no. A previous message said they thought it was in the early seventies. It well could have been, because I remember not being able to find it anywhere, but in Union county.
