    3. Well, Bobbie, I had resisted, so far , from contributing this go-round of walking down lovely memory lane. However, talk of Cas Walker, Boloney samiches & such has gotten my juices flowing. Not only do I remember (when just a towheaded lad of 10 or so) spending weeks with my mamaw & papaw just off Loyston road. I always slept on the couch in the living room and the first thing I woke to, were the sounds of Cas's show, smells of strong coffee an d frying breakfast meats. And papaw was sitting by a nearby open window smoking a handrolled cigarette. It was the only time smoke didn't bother me. Heck , now in memory, all those smells rank exsqisite . Maybe the best thing was that twice a week or so, we loaded up into papaws old dusty Dodge Rambler and went to Cas's grocery store on old Broadway. After shopping mamaw would get out a box of crackers and the sliced liver cheese she had just bought. So, before we started the trip home, we'd have a snack. Oh yes, if you hanker to hear some memories, including her own memories of Cas's show, and the theme song (Pick up the morning paper when it hits the streets, Cas walkers prices just can't be beat. Get that Blue band coffee and you'll want some more. Do your grocery shoppin at the Cas Walker stores. This is on Dolly Partons album (CD) Heartsongs (Live from Home) If you're from east Tennesse, youll love it. Her version of My Tennesse Mountain Home is especially touching. J.D.

    2. I believe that's right his family was from Sevier County. I know he was related to the Walkers in Claiborne, but I don't know how. When he went hunting with my grandfather they referred to him as a relative, but being only a little boy I didn't listen. If you want to look have a look at the Walkers from around the Walkers Ford area of Claiborne County. It's now under water of the lake, but it's the area where the Walkers I'm referring to lived. 2. Cas Walker, who died in 1998 at the age of 96, was a Knoxville icon. Cas was a millionaire grocer, one-time mayor, eternal member of City Council, local television celebrity, scandal-sheet publisher, breeder of championship coon dogs, and relentless thorn-in-the-flesh to anyone who opposed him. Depending on the situation, Cas could be as redneck or as blueblood as he needed to be. We alternately cussed him and kissed him, which was our prerogative because, by gum, he was one of us. 3. My step-father's memories were a great Sunday afternoon joy. He could tell a tale better than any professional storyteller. Because my half sisters were much younger than I, I stored away many of his memories to tell them. Now that their father is gone they love the re-telling. Cas Walker; Started selling groceries with a horse and wagon. His supplies were mostly staples but he oftentimes would have fresh produce as he went from house to house. Beans and other died staples were sold out of barrels. He later acquired a truck and finally a store to sell his wares. Cas was a stern man who just didn't fool everybody. He never let a family he knew were hungry go hungry . Cas was much more than the face he showed to the world. He enjoyed a good fight a good story and a good cigar. I wish I could tell this the way my step-father could but I think I got across what he tried to get across to me. He told me much about Bobbie Beeler, (the Queeners from Fountain City and Aunt Willie Capps just to name a few) and many of the other old folks from Manardville(sp?) and Knoxville. My Grandfather Zack Sutton passed down stories about Claiborne County and her folks. They are stories I enjoy passing down to my children who have no knowledge of the south other than "Mom was from Shawanee Tennessee." Oral history is one of the most valuable treasures I brought with me to the north. Bette

    3. Tom, I sure do remember -- most of them! I remember Bill & Cliff Carlisle (Bill's alter ego was "Hot Shot Elmer" - saw him in person when I was 12 yrs. old at a school house in Moores Creek, KY. He wore red flannel underwear! I remember Don Gibson, the Carter Sisters & Mother Maybelle, and yes, Archie Campbell, who went on to fame on HeeHaw. So many of them, and so many now gone. They sure did make the life of a little country girl much happier. No televisions then - just radio, and sometimes no electricity! We had a battery powered radio for use when the electric would be off for one reason or another. I miss those times when we were young and carefree. Joyce

Also, WNOX hosted the Saturday Night Barn dance in their auditorium where many of Orpy fame performed or got their start there. Carolyn --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. All this talk about Cass Walker reminds me - am I the only one who remembers Lowell Blanchard and the "Midday Merry-go-round" out of Knoxville in the 40's (maybe 50's, too)? Lot's of big name country artists came through that program too, including Union County's own Carl Smith and Chet Atkins. I spent many happy hours listening to all them when I was a child. Joyce

If you know any stories about them... please tell me. I would love to know anything them. I think Thomas Preston Whitehead/WHITTED was the township trustee for Claiborne..(maybe Big Barren??) There was a little about Thomas Whitehead in the Tazwell Book mentioning him being robbed of lots of county money he had at his home. He died in 1851 in Claiborne County and is buried now at Big Barren Cemetary. Mary Lou Indianapolis

Growing up in Knoxville, my childhood friend was the daughter of a policeman who was killed on duty. Her mother never remarried and had the difficult task of raising two daughters on her salary from Brookside Mills. This lady grew up with Cas Walker in Sevier County and he was so nice to bring them groceries on occasion. Carolyn do you remember this? Also I have pleasant memories of Cas Walker's on Broadway, since my husband worked there when we were dating. Thanks for the memories, Cas, Lowell, The Midday Merry Go Round, and as yet I haven't heard anyone mention ole Eddie Parker's name. Georgia > >
