While he was probably long gone in 1880, maybe some of his children were still living (check for possible children in a will/probate record). The 1880 census does list the birth place of each person's father & mother. That can be valuable for clues, although isn't always 100% accurate. While you're looking at wills/probate records, check the surname of people in other wills. I have been able to extend lines a generation or two using those records. Also, sometimes land records are useful for the same purpose, although neither record format is a "quickie" answer, as you have to look at all the known surnames to get the right clues. (One of the reasons I usually use the LDS Family History Centers for working wills & land records if visiting the actual counties are too far away to access easily.) Happy hunting.
