Early census data indicates the Timbs name was spelled Tims and Timms before the great migration into Tennessee and westward. From my own research it appears the Timbs spelling is almost unique to Tipton County TN beginning about 1850. I have an 1850 family Bible that has Tims and Timbs as the surname within the same basic family. I also have a Tipton Co. legal document with the name spelled three different ways therein: Tims, Timms, and Times
