Surnames: Shelton, Sherrod, Massey, McFerrin, Vincent Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jgB.2ACE/1041 Message Board Post: My gg-grandfather was Frederick Shelton of Greensville Co. Va. His wife was Mary Massey. On June 13,1822 his daughter Eliza R. Shelton married Irvin Rhodes Sherrod from Northampton Co. N.C. In 1832 the Sherrods were living in Tipton Co. Tn. where Irvin R. Sherrod became a prominent citizen. Sometime around 1840 Frederick's daughter Mary M. Shelton apparently moved to Tipton Co. Tn to be with her sister. I found marriage record dated Feb. 14,1843 to a John A. Vincent. This must be my Mary Shelton. Frederick and Mary Shelton had another daughter, Rebecca Shelton married to Alanson A. Massey . Both of these people died around early 1830s in Greensville Co.and left Frederick Shelton Guardian but Frederick died in 1838 leaving his business partner Henry Wyche guardian of there Grandchildren, Mary A. Massey, Rebecca Massey, Frederick Massey and Sarah Massey.. In 1840 a James H. McFerrin from Tipton Co. Tn came to Virginia Greensville Co. and Married Mary A. Massey and took over as guardian to Frederick an Rebecca Massey and apparenty took them back to Tipton Co. Tn. I found marriage record on March 15,1843 for James H. McFerrin and Rebecca Massey. Strange! Apparently Mary A. Massey died and James married her Sister Rebecca whom he was guardian in 1840. Does anyone know anything about any of these families? Is James H. McFerrin related to the Sherrods? Need any Information on Sheltons, Sherrods, Masseys, McFerrins or Vincents during this time period in Tipton County. Thanks

    3. I am very interested in your Mary Massey. You did not say if she came from the Carolinas. My gr.gr.grandmother was a Massey from South Carolina. She and my gr.gr.grandfather moved to Tipton County in 1872. I have a theory that she may have had existing family in Tipton County, which was the attraction of why they settled there over other locations where he had family. They came from a very clannish Scots/Presbyterian group that tended to always live near other family members.
