I am very interested in your Mary Massey. You did not say if she came from the Carolinas. My gr.gr.grandmother was a Massey from South Carolina. She and my gr.gr.grandfather moved to Tipton County in 1872. I have a theory that she may have had existing family in Tipton County, which was the attraction of why they settled there over other locations where he had family. They came from a very clannish Scots/Presbyterian group that tended to always live near other family members. Sherrod became a prominent citizen. Sometime around 1840 Frederick's daughter Mary M. Shelton apparently moved to Tipton Co. Tn to be with her sister. I found marriage record dated Feb. 14,1843 to a John A. Vincent. This must be my Mary Shelton. Frederick and Mary Shelton had another daughter, Rebecca Shelton married to Alanson A. Massey . Both of these people died around early 1830s in Greensville Co.and left Frederick Shelton Guardian but Frederick died in 1838 leaving his business partner Henry Wyche guardian of there Grandchildren, Mary A. It brought back memories of my childhood. My father grew up in Covington and we have 3 of the Miss Minerva books. One is autographed by the woman who wrote the others after the original author died. Some where, I can't remember specifics now, we're related to the character so it was always fun reading.
please excuse my err--I meant for my letter to go to an indiv. not the whole list. Sorry, Martha
That is so sweet of you. Do u live in Covington? My hubby and I are going to Memphis this Sunday to see my aunt there that's in poor health--she's 82 and failing fast. We will be going to Covington while there (in Memphis till Tues) and I'd love to meet with u when we go to Covington--but I don't know right now which day we will be going! I'd like to show you where the graves are--I have no idea how to describe the locations to you. Will u be available and close by or ---? My grandmother's maiden name was Turner--very distantly related to the dairy people----nowhere close enough to claim any of their $$ --darn! I grew up in Memphis till about the 10th grade (1961) when my family moved to Little Rock. I started college in AR and when they moved back to Memphis in l966 I stayed in college in AR. Well, I married a guy from Arkanss and my mom always said she lost her ony daughter to the state of AR. My dad passed away in l968 of a heart attack and my mom in 11/96 after heart surgery. I do have 2 bros in Memphis but we had a falling out and don't contact each other any more. They evidently never go to the cemetery as I go about once a year and my "prev" flowers are always there! I'd be happy to pay all expenses of your driving, getting the flowers, film, developing, etc if you don't mind doing it. It would give me peace of mind. I went thru breast cancer 3 yrs ago and just don't get over there like I use to--I still get tired so easily. I will take my laptop computer to Memphis so I'll be checking email as often as possible. If you need me before I leave, my phone # is 479-471-6968. I'm in and out a lot but I do have an answ machine. Do you show any Turner's, Crunks, Goldman's in your family line --could we be related??? :-) THANKS A BUNCH!! Martha Forrest

I do not remember his parents names but could easily find out. I do know that he had one brother--Thornton Hill. Thronton married Annie Lowenhoupt? also from Covington. Annie and Thronton did not have any children. William Green Hill also married -at least once. I do not believe he had children either. William Green Hill was an alcoholic, unfortunately, and did in fact die in a boxcar. I remeber him coming out to our farm (Obviously I was a child at the time) and being sent in the house because William Green was very drunk and Daddy did not want us to see him. My parents (both deceased) were very close friends of Annie and Thronton and most likely of William Green when he was in Covington. I remember Annie and Thornton well. They were wonderful people, as I assume, so was William Green Hill. Thronton also had a drinking problem. I believe this is an inherited illness which was certainly not understood in their time!! After Thornton's death, Annie moved to Nashville and was Dunn's personal secretary when he was a dentist. I believe she retired when he became politically active instead of "taking on such stress" If you have not had any reponses to your inquiry--I can assure you I could connect you with people who could anser your questions. My e-mail is dstroth1@midsouth.rr.com--- my brother in law/sister- most likely could be of help--- you could e-mail them at barbmcbride@webtv.net. We all have Miss Minerva books autographed by William Green----if any of us can locate them. Out of curiousity (I cannot spell!) how do you develope an interest in William Green Hill. I have other "things" relating to him. Appreciate your interest Jenny Many of the Sanford decendents still are in Covington (I assume the same family) I won't bore you with more at this point
