The only "Jeff Davis Hwy" I find on a present TN., map is located near Murfreesboro TN. Does anyone know of a road or Hwy in the Tipton Co. area that is, or used to be called this, and if it is no longer called this, can anyone tell me what this road or highway is now called, so I might determine closely to where this family was living in 1920? Surnames: Thompson -Willis Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jgB.2ACE/675.1 Message Board Post: This is a follow-up to my own posting from some time ago. It just goes to show that family 'legend' or 'lore' is often proven to be very in-accurate when real research is done. My posting, of which I am replying was very wrong. Here is what research has found about this family. My Thompson connection began with Nancy Jane Pace-Gist (Guess) who was my ggg.grandmother, born in AL., in 1839. She married 1st to James Harvey Gist about 1854, and they lived in Marion Co., AL., by the 1860 census. James H. Gist joined up with the Union Army during the Civil War and did not return to Nancy Jane after the war. She thought him dead and moved about 1867 to Old Tishomingo Co., MS., along with her 3 "Gist" children, and her father, "Richmond Pace", who also brought his younger children. Nancy Jane Pace Gist (Guess) remarried in Old Tishomingo Co., MS., in 1869 to Benjamin F. Thompson, and they appeared on the census of Prentiss Co., MS. (formed out of part of Old Tishomongo Co.) in 1870. Nancy Jane's children by her "Gist" husband were; Nancy Ann E., Talitha Jane, and John Posey Gist. The marriage records of Prentiss Co., MS., show that Talitha Jane Guest (Gist/Guess) married Thomas J. Thompson in that county in 1876. I found they had moved, as had Talitha's mother and step-father, Nancy Jane and Benjamin F. Thompson, to Hardin Co., TN., by the 1880 census. I have not been able to find a marriage record for daughter, "Nancy Ann E. Gist", but she did marry a man named "Unknown Butler" sometime around 1875, and most likely in Prentiss Co., MS. They had two children together, "Alonzo and Delia May Butler". This "Butler" husband, either died or disserted her, or they divorced, and I am unable to confirm her or her children's location on the 1880 census. By the 1900 census, I do find Talitha Jane with her husband, "T.J. Thompson" living in Tipton Co., TN., and I find Nancy Ann with her 2nd husband, James Franklin Thompson, living in the neighboring county of Madison Co., TN. The census data tells of a 21 year marriage between Nancy Ann and James Franklin Thompson, making their marriage year about c1879. They have children together, as well as Nancy's oldest son, "Alonzo" age 23, all living in the same household. Daughter, "Delia May Butler" is 3 doors away, married in 1895 in Madison Co., TN., to James C. Crawford, and she is living in his home, with several children they have had since their marriage in 1895. I have concluded that all the "Thompson" connections to both mother, Nancy Jane Pace-Gist, and her two daughters', "Nancy Ann E. Gist-Butler-Thompson", and "Talitha Jane Gist-Thompson" are all unrelated to one another, given their differing states of birth and those of their parents. It appears to be a coincidence that they all married "Thompson" men, but no relation appears to exist between these three men. I would like to find out what has happened to some of the descendants of Thomas J. Thompson and wife "Talitha Jane Gist-Thompson", who lived in Tipton Co., TN., from sometime after the 1880 census where they were in Hardin Co. TN., up to their deaths..him sometime after 1910, and her, sometime after 1930. The children of Thomas J. Thompson and wife Talitha Jane Gist-Thompson, who appear in their household on the census's of 1880-1900-1910-1920 are as follows; James - born c1877 in TN. (likely Hardin Co.) Cora - born c1879 in TN. (likely Hardin Co.) Lewis F. - born 1881 in TN. (Hardin or Tipton Co.) Allis (Alice) - born 1884 in TN. (Hardin or Tipton Co.) Hattie - born 1887 in TN., (Hardin or Tipton Co.) Pearl - born 1891 in TN. (Hardin or Tipton Co.)* married Pinkney Willis-? Willie -(female) -born 1893 in TN. (Hardin or Tipton Co.) Ruth - born 1895 in TN. (Hardin or Tipton Co.) Gertrude - born 1898 in TN. (Hardin or Tipton Co.) Dennis F. - born c1903 in Tipton Co. TN. I believe daughter, "Pearl" married a man named Pinkney Willis, as I found a household, headed up by a man with this name, and much older than his wife, living next door to Talitha Thompson, widowed, on the 1920 census of Tipton Co. TN., and his wife was named "Pearl" and her age fits as does her birth states, with that of "Pearl Thompson". Pinkney Willis, age 53, has a young wife, Pearl, age 28, and also in the house are children who appear to be by his previous marriage, ages up to 21 years old. They also have several young children, under the age of 11, who are likely the children of Pickney and Pearl, named Morris, Dolly, and Newman. The 1930 census shows Talitha living with son, Lewis F. Thompson, and his family; wife, "Nancy E. (or Homsey E.), and children; "Loise"(female), Cecil A., Wanda M., Louis D.(male), Thomas E., and Gracie E. The 1920 census had Lewis F. Thompson's household with with "Homsey E. (or Nancy E.), and these children; Arene, Eddie L. (female), Cecil, Wanda Mai, and Lewis D.(male). I would love to hear from descendants of any of these above. Nancy Ann E. Gist-Butler-Thompson was my gg.grandmother. I have some pictures to share and hope to find 'cousin's who might have information and pictures as well. Thank-you! Christi christip@southshore.com

I was able to find them in the 1900 census after you told me they were in Dist. 15, but it was a smaller area to cover and I wanted to print out a copy of the orginal census. The 1910 census of Dist. 1 is very large and would take me a long time to search each page on the on-line census images on ancestry.com. If you did note either the page #, or the dwelling/family number and could let me know of it, I'd sure appreciate it. If I can do any look-ups for you on the above, I'd be happy too. All of the children except for Mary (who was married to Pleasant Bowman) are living in seperate homes on the 1860 Census in Haywood County, Tennessee. So I believe the parents were dead. To the Drummons/Drumonds Query (sorry I couldn't find your name. It is very likely your Anne Drummonds belongs in my line. My research notes are quite old, I am sending only basic outline for you to decide. There is an Ann Drummons (age 10) listed in the Tipton County1860 Census in the family of James Drummons and Nancy Walker who were married in Tipton County in 6 Jan 1842 by Mack Drummonds, J.P (I descend from Robert Drummons, son of James and Nancy) I only have information on three of James and Nancy Drummonds children - Robert, James Samuel and Laticia who married J. B. Hurt. I had the marriage record for Anne Drummonds, Ann H. and H. H. Joyner - 6 Nov 1866 by L. Adams, M.G. - C/80 the same as you have, but I do not have 1870 for Joyner/Drummonds reading (Do you have that?) I have census readings for Robert and Samuel - no James or Nancy. I have thought this indicated their deaths. Also in the 1860 Census (in the same District) there is William Joyner and Nancy with a son, Harvey, age 11. Is this your Harvey? If you would like fuller and additional information, please contact me on off list. We can probably compare notes easier. I can also send the document sources for my data.
