Surnames: Mitchell, Osteen, Dempsey, Tracey Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/jgB.2ACE/1062 Message Board Post: Hi. I'm looking for information on the children of my great-great grandparents Leonard Mitchell and Mary Ethel "Mollie" Osteen. Both of them had been married previously, and I'm looking for information on any children they may have had from those marriages. Leonard was first married to a woman named "Sallie" sometime before 1897. He appears with her and two of their children on the 1880 Tate County Mississippi Census: Mitchell, Leonard - Self, M, M, W, 26, AR Mitchell, Sallie - Wife, F, M, W, 20, TN Mitchell, Minnie - Daughter, F, S, W, 3, MS Mitchell, Willie F. - Son, M, S, W, 1, MS Mollie was first married to a man recorded as "R. Dempsey" on February 25, 1894 in Tate County, Mississippi. I don't know if there were any children by this marriage. Leonard and Mollie appear together with two of their daughters on the 1920 Tipton County Tennessee Census: Mitchell, Leonard head m w 61 m AR AR MS farmer , Ethel wife f w 42 m MS MS MS none , Addie M. daughter f w 8 s TN AR MS , Ida daughter f w 5 s TN AR MS My great-grandmother was Addie Mae Mitchell. She mentioned a second sister named Ethel Rose "Rosie" Mitchell who was born shortly after this Census was taken in 1920. The girls' mother died shortly after giving birth to Rosie and seven years later their father also passed away. Addie took on the responsibility of raising her little sisters and on the 1930 Tipton County Tennessee Census Ida is living with Addie and her husband William T. Tracey: Tracey, William T. head m w 22 m 20 TN TN TN farmer , Addie M. wife-h f w 19 m 18 TN TN TN none , William T. Jr. son m w 3/12 s TN TN TN none Mitchel, Ida M. sister-in-law f w 16 s TN TN TN none But where is Rosie? She would only have been 10 years old so she couldn't have lived on her own. Perhaps she's living with an older half-sibling? Addie mentioned that she had a (half or step) brother Pete and a (half or step) sister that lived in St. Louis I believe. If anyone has any information on the people I've mentioned here, please contact me. Thanks for reading. Terra Tracy

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jgB.2ACE/1059.1.1 Message Board Post: I'm afraid I included almost everything I know in the original message. I do have approximate birth years from the censuses for Samuel's children, also more information on William's children and grandchildren. One of William's sons, James Marvin, was my grandfather. I have not been able to find very much on Roes in the southern half of the United States on the internet. So I started searching the censuses. I have the census records on every Roe/Rowe/Row listed in the 1850, 1860, 1880 and some of the 1870 census indices. I have found, to my dismay, that the indices often leave out some. For example, my Samuel was not listed in the 1870 index. Another Samuel (much younger) was listed. A search page by page through the census itself found my Samuel on the same page with the other one! These searches take a long time since the nearest library is over an hour away. Please contact me directly at droe@gbronline.com so we can share information.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jgB.2ACE/175.1 Message Board Post: My great-grand mother was Anne Jane Howard and she was the daughter of George C Howard. My best guess is that George Howard, William, and your John were all brothers. If that is the case their father was a Tom Howard from Middle TN I believe. This is a line of mine that I am just working with. George Howard had several children---1 was a William. I am not sure if there was a John but it should not be hard to find out. Many of George Howard's children are buried in or around Covington in Tipton County. If I understood you --John and William (brothers of George) / or was it John and his wife / died in Yellow fever epidemic--soooooooooo he very well may have named children after his brothers-------don't you think? As far as learning about your 'John'--George's brother most likely--I am not sure how to help. I grew up in Tipton County and now live in Shelby County. The Shelby County library may have a list of those who died in the epidemic with additional information about them. That is a long shot since the Yellow Fever hit with such force that there may have been no time for many recordings. Do you have any grave site information, or possibly occupation information. This family was know and respected in Tipton County--as I think would to be the case as well in Shelby. This certainly helps when researching persons of this era or earlier. If you would like cemetey lookups for Atoka and Munford I am glad to try on the internet. As far as going to the graves for tombstone pictures------it will have to wait till spring. I have arthritis also so cold weather is not my friend. My e-mail address is dstroth1@midsouth.rr.com. Let me know exactly what I can do to be of help.
