NORBERG, Major Infantry, North Providence, RI; 02 Jun 1933-7 Jun 1966 Lon A. SPURLOCK, LtCol Infantry, Midkiff, WV; 23 Apr 1936-28 Mar 1969 These are my friends that I would like all of you to remember this Memorial Day 2001 they have a lot in common they were all career Army officers, all were in the Infantry and they all died in the Republic of Vietnam and their names now appear on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. They were all married and had young children. I was with two of them when they were hit and in George Dailey's case about thirty feet away. George Commanded B Company 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division while I Commanded C Company of the same unit. Ed Hornstein and Bill Norberg graduated from college together and I met them on my first day in the Army as we went to the Basic Infantry Officer's Course (BIOC-5) Starting in Nov 1956 - Fort Benning, GA. We then went to Airborne and Ranger schools and then were on the same plane going to Korea where we were assigned to the 7th Infantry Division - but not the same unit. While in Korea I served in the 17th Infantry Regiment with Jim Conway - we were both in the same Rifle Company, Jim was the Weapons platoon Leader while I had one of the three Rifle Platoons. Besides being a fellow Tennessean Jim was one of the senior 2nd Lt's in the Regiment and he was a great help to me as 2nd Lt's (Infantry) have a lot to learn and a very short time to learn it.... also in the Regiment were Jack McClure and John Arnn we were all 2nd Lt's together. (Major James B. Conway was awarded the Distinguised Service Cross {Posthumously} Our Nations 2nd Highest Combat award for Valor) Then in 1962 when we were Captains Jack McClure, Lon Spurlock and George Hussy and I all commanded Mechanized Rifle Companies in the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry, of the Third Armored Division. As such we worked with and competed against each other every day for the 12 to 14 months we were Company Comanders. We also knew each others families as Germany unlike Korea was an accompanied tour. LtCol George Eyster was the Battalion Commander of the 2/28th Infantry, the son of a General Officer and on his way to higher rank, one of the finest officers I have ever served with. LtCol Lippman was the Brigade Executive Officer and as such worked with all of the Company and Battalion Commanders on a pretty much daily basis, he was the finest EXO I have ever worked with as he knew everyone in the Brigade and made you proud to be his unit. I miss each of them and am proud to have known them and call them my friend and to have had the privilige of serving with them. I will never forget them and the sacrifice they made for all of us................. Uncle John in Falco
