James Lowery migrated from Wilson County, TN (adjacent to Sumner County, TN) to Williamson County, IL about 1840. This Elizabeth Lowery or Lowry, married William Eaton in IL and the couple are living right next door to James Lowery (born 1781, NC-died 1855 IL) in the 1850 Williamson County, IL census. James Lowery's ancestors thought this Elizabeth was a child of James until they saw her county marriage record in IL to Wm Eaton. Apparently, on her marriage record in southern IL, she listed George and Jane Minter Lowery as her parents. Don't know if this is accurate or not as I've never seen the record. I'm also not sure of this, but George Lowery may have come to southern IL after the divorce from Jane Minter and died there. Basically, if you look at the 1820-1830 Sumner County, TN censuses, you'll find James, Rueben and William Lowry under odd spellings of their surname (I think in 1820, there are listed under something like LAWERIE. Rueben Lowery married Esther Davis. (Rueben was a distiller and apparently ran drinking establishment on Shackle Island (which is a town that sprang up around a drinking establishment in Sumner County, TN). Esther Davis Lowery as a widow wound up in Gallatin County, IL, where she is found on the 1860 census with children living with her and grown children heads of household in the same county. William Lowrey married Nancy Davis. He was a blacksmith in Sumner Co., TN. Rueben is listed as a "son" on William's estate papers. Both William and Nancy Davis Lowrey died in the 1840s, I believe and are buried in Sumner County, TN. Some of the kids of all three of these early Sumner County, TN Lowery/Lowrey/Lowry folks wound up in southern IL. According to my great-grandfather Thomas Jesse Lowry's Civil War record, he was born in 1838 in Sumner County, TN. I haven't been able to find him among any of these three early Sumner County Lowery/Lowrey families. Recently, I found a John Lowery in 1850 Gallatin County, IL with a Jesse T. Lowery, age 12, born TN, who is the right age and birthplace to be my Thomas J. Lowry. When I looked this family up on the 1860 Gallatin County census, John Lowery's wife had remarried a Wm Hensley, John was gone, and what I think may be Jesse T. Lowery is now going by perhaps his middle name, Thomas Lowery, and is living with the McGehee family. If this Thomas is John Lowery's son, then Thomas is living with his married sister and her family as I have a record in Gallatin of John Lowery's daughter marrying George McGehee. Anything ring a bell here, let me know! John Lowery or Lowry, who may have been the father of my Thomas Jesse Lowry, was born in 1817 in NC. I have yet to find a death date for John, a divorce date from his wife Rachael in IL between 1850-1855 (when she remarried) or any more info about him. One record has him born in 1817 in NC, dying in Iowa in 1890. If anyone can fill in the blanks, I'd be so appreciative.
