There is a John M. Cotton from Cottontown, Sumner co. TN (born abt. 1831)that was the son of Noah Cotton and grandson to Capt. Thomas Cotton (Namesake of Cottontown)  John M. Cotton's wife was Nancy Jane Duke. Their daughter Mary Alice Cotton, Strother.  Hope this helps.
