I cannot prove that Susan Ann's maiden name was Short, and I do not know the names of her parents; thus, the qualification that I believe it was. My information comes from two sources: (1) The McQuiston-McCuiston-McQuesten Families book published in 1937 by Leona Bean McQuiston, which states on pg. 621: "Harrison McQuiston, born Oct. 11, 1829, in Decatur County, Indiana; removed to Sumner County, Tennessee, in 1877. The records of Marion, Ind., indicate that he was in Jasper County, Illinois, in 1864. He was married first, Oct. 11, 1850, in Decatur County, by Joshua Selby, M.G., to Mary Ann Cottingham.; married second, Feb. 21, 1855, Susan Ann Short who was born July 30, 1836, and died Jan. 31, 1893;........Children from Bible record furnished by Francis Marion:......" (2) A Short descendant from the marriage of Ida Mae McQuiston and Joseph Short. Other than this, I have no additional information or proof, but you can probably see why there is confusion. Thanks again for all your help. John Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Harrison was first married to Mary Cottingham and they had two children, James Franklin (who died in infancy) and Synthia Ann (who died around age 5). He was then married to Susan Ann SHORT, and they had the following children: Lutda L., James Wesley (the J.W. mentioned above), Sarah Frances, Mary Catherine, Nathan Ellsworth, Ovanda T., Ida May, Charlotte Belle, and Francis Marion. The mother in law listed on the 1880 census living in the J.W. McQuiston home would be his mother, Susan Ann Short McQuiston. Susan Ann could possibly have married a White after Harrison's death, and that could be where the name White comes into play, but I have found nothing to indicate that to be the case. Thanks for the information you have provided here, and I would be interested in any additional information available concerning these families. Dear Jeannie, I am the 1900 Census Lookup person for Sumner Co. I know I have contacted you before, but never about a May/Maye. I believe my May(e)(s) to be descended from Frederick May and William May who came from Montgomery Co.VA to Simpson Co. KY to Sumner Co, TN. My great-great grandmother was Sarah Ann Mayes b. 1826 who married Calvin Hunter b. 1813 Sumner, TN in 1846 as his third wife. Their dau. Mary Jane Hunter b. 1858 (officially 1860) m. Thomas Inman "Inney" Summers in 1874 and they divorced with her maiden name restored in Jan 1879. No children. She m.2 my great-grandfather William Oliver Read b. 1853 Sumner Co. TN in Dec 1879. Nine children were born incl. my grandfather Ollie Witham Read b. 1893. Mary Jane Read m.3 S.L. "Fate" Biggs in 1925, but he died in 1927. I have had a nearly impossible time tracing the May(es) girls who married Calvin Hunter. I have no idea who Calvin married first (one ch.Mary born mentally handicapped). His second wife was Susannah Mayes m. 1837. (5 ch) and she probably died. in childbirth in 1846, so he m.3 Sarah Ann Mayes. They may have been sisters or cousins or not related at all. I also can't locate any Hunter graves even though they lived in Northern Sumner. The women could very well be May/Mayes from Northern Robertson Co. too. Calvin's parents m.. in 1802 in Sumner Co., and those records are lost. They were Cader Hunter and Phebe Dinning. Please write if you find anything. Also: Robertson Co. Lookup: I really need help with anything Read/Reed/Reid before 1830 in Robertson Co. TN My 4th great-grandfather was James Read who d. 1826 and is buried in or near Springfield. Which cemetery could that be? He was once married to a woman named Lydia. His father was Moses Read who died in the Revolution and may have been born or killed.in PA. James Read's son was Lunsford Read b. abt. 1804 d. abt. 1856. There was also a Lunsford b. in the 1830s who was a grandson of James Read. I know with the exception of James Read, the man who died in 1826, they all moved to Montgomery Co. TN later, but I need the earliest marriages, land, will, probate, cemetery and any other records that can be found in Robertson Co..for anybody Read/Reed/Reid. There may be two "Moses Read's" who journeyed this way. I don't know if I will ever get down to Springfield. Thanks so much for trying to help me. She discovered the following land transaction. In 1820, a deed registration was filed (p. 204 Sumner Co. Court Minutes Book, Microfilm Roll 87), showing James Gilliam had purchased 400 acres of land from Hartwell Ayer. The entire deed was apparently not recorded. He is shown on Sumner County tax lists for 1818-1821 as paying taxes on 417 acres of land at Garrett Fork. He is listed on the 1821 Sumner Co, TN Record of Taxable Property as: James Gillam 400 acres, Ridge, 0 Free Poll, 10 Black Polls. No record has been found of James receiving a land grant, and members of the Virginia Militia were not eligible for bounty land. Juanita and I have just returned from Virginia where we did further research on our Gilliam and Faris families. I hope this answers your query.
