TN after mid-January 1853. Confederate Pension Application: Sumner Co. TN # S6090 Unit: 9th (Ward's) Cavalry. Company E. He also served with the 15th Tennessee Cavalry, Company H, listed as a blacksmith, and in Captain Richard McCann's Cavalry Squadron which was probably comprised mostly of men from Davidson County. No muster rolls have been found. As part of Ward's 9th TN Cavalry, he fought December 7, 1862 at the Battle of Hartsville in Sumner Co. TN (later Trousdale Co.) and at Glasgow, Kentucky December 25, 1862 in the "Christmas Raid" also as part of Ward's 9th Cavalry, but under Gen. John Hunt Morgan. On March 25, 1863, he was part of McCann's Co. K. 9th Tennessee Cavalry Regt. riding under Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest scoring a Confederate victory by defending Brentwood in Williamson County. By May of 1863, he again was with Company E in Smith, White, Jackson, Fentress, Overton, Putnam, and De Kalb Counties, and at Cookeville, TN on May 6, 1863. On June 11, 1863, Morgan and his "Raiders" left Alexandria, TN for the greatest of his raids through Indiana and Ohio. While riding with Lt. Col. William W. Ward's 9th under the command of General John Hunt Morgan, William Benjamin Read was captured at Buffington Island, Ohio on July 19, 1863. As a POW, he was taken to Camp Morton (Indianapolis) and due to overcrowding, transferred on September 14 to Camp Douglas (Chicago) by rail where he suffered with thousands of other Southerners under the most inhumane of conditions. He avoided starvation and disease and survived the winter of 1864, which even Northerners agreed was one of the worst ever. He was paroled June 9, 1865. He returned to Gallatin to find his wife Amanda (Morris/Carney) Read b. 1833 Nashville, had died December 16, 1864, leaving their three sons as wards of Guilford Read, his father. William Benjamin Read lived out his life in Richland/Portland as a blacksmith and serving as a commissioner performing several weddings, overseeing the poorhouse, and keeping records and fines of illegal liquor production and the like. He m2 ! Martha Ann Hunter, a daughter of Calvin and Sarah(Mayes)Hunter in 1870. She died the 23 of July 1904, and he followed on 01 Oct 1904. Author: KHill60 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.tennessee.counties.sumner/4622/mb.ashx Message Board Post: >From the book, ""On This Day", by James A. Cutchfield: August 12, 1862 Confederate Colonel John Hunt Mogan and his elite 2nd Kentucky Cavalry sweep into Gallatin and capture the Union garrison there. The raid is part of a devastating three week campaign into Tennessee and Kentucky and prompts President Abraham Lincoln to wire the Union general in command of the region, "They are having a stampede in Kentucky. Please look to it". Found at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/regiments.cfm (Although the 2nd had victories in 1862, all the men in this unit had been captured by the Union by July of 1863.) 2nd (Morgan's) Cavalry Regiment was organized during the summer of 1862 using Morgan's Kentucky Cavalry Squadron as its nucleus. The unit contained men from Kentucky, Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama. It served in Morgan's Brigade and was active in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio. Many were captured in the conflict at Buffington Island on July 19 and the remaining part at New Lisbon on July 26, 1863. The regiment was not reorganized. Its field officers were Colonels Basil W. Duke and John H. Morgan, Lieutenant Colonels James W. Bowles and John B. Hutcheson, and Majors G.W. Morgan and T.B. Webber. Author: deadlinz Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.tennessee.counties.sumner/4621/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm searching for William J. Henson's parents. I have William J. Henson (b. 1834) living with Thomason (b. 1801) and Emily Hinson (1850 she was 31 y.o.) in 1850 and 1840 in Jackson County, TN. Thomason's mother Ana Hinson (born in NC) resides with them too. In 1820 Tomlinson Henson was living in Monroe County, KY with a female about his same age (so obviously not Emily) In the Jackson County, TN 1850 census - they deliberately spell William J.'s name differently than the family he is living with. I take that to mean that he is of blood, but something is off. I am assuming that Emily is not his birth mother, but I have to prove that his father is Thomason Tomlinson Hinson in order to move back. Any information at all?
